Totally agree ..... he just shows what hard work can do. When CW arrived Coutts was on the way out. He could have sulked, moaned and blamed everyone but himself .......... instead he got his head down and made himself into the best player in L1..... he was outstanding in the championship until the gutting broken leg. What a guy who then after celebrating promotion to the PL decided his time was up and he just wanted to play football. Hats off to him and as you say DronnieBlade ... all the best to him.

Barton gets bad press,but he knows a top footballer……it was a career changer at Burton,he was never the same player after the injury,but he has found success at the ‘Gas’ i for one am absolutely delighted for him,he played a blg part in our revival.He is a top footballer,good luck Paul.

Coutts could/should have played in the Prem division for us. A bold statement? Just before the act of thuggery that put an end to his Blade's career, he was playing to his usually high level in the Championship and looked a cert to follow the rise from Div 1 through to the Prem.

At his best he exuded class and quality, and the fact that he was part of one of the best midfield's we've ever seen in the red and white stripes (alongside Duffy and Fleck) was instrumental in the success we enjoyed. To my eyes he epitomised what it meant to be a great footballer - technique, awareness, rarely gave the ball away, and possessed of the type of football intelligence you only get to see a few times during a lifetime watching football.

Although there are plenty of examples of games in which Coutts played a central role, for me it was the away game against Wednesday when, amongst several other great performances, he looked every part the great player he had become.

Paul Coutts; I felt so fortunate to have seen him turn from a player that may have left us due to his inconsistency to become someone (and this is where Chris Wilder deserves credit) that graced the red and white stripes in ways that left a lasting and wonderful impression.

I think what’s held him back from the top level is that he’s a loose cannon by all accounts. Absolute pisshead and then nuts when he’s had a beer.

It was a privilege to witness Coutts' season and a bit long purple patch with us. An absolute Rolls Royce of a player who always seemed to be in the right place, who never seemed pressured or rushed on the ball and who could pass as well as anyone. To echo itsinyerblood , that midfield trio was indeed the best united midfield that I have seen play in the flesh, certainly the most balanced as they all complimented each other perfectly. Coutts was the lynchpin of that "team within a team".

I often wonder what would have happened if he had not gone for that loose ball in the Burton match. It's highly possible that we would have gone up again, especially with Clarke's form as the season progressed. At the same time, we would likely never have signed all of Norwood, Egan, or Didsy as we did in the 2nd Champ season.

Sliding doors and all that, and I wouldn't change anything about our journey to the Premier League, but it is such a shame that Coutts and Duffy for that matter, never got a chance to show their stuff at that level. I think they both had enough about them to compete.
