The story earlier in the thread of their fans cheering a United goal when told about it over the tannoy is actually laughable now.

At what point did the two sides become more partisan?

I knew of a couple of people in the 1980s who had season tickets for both clubs, but that was regarded as unusual by that time.

Things have become more partisan over time, little by little. In the 1980s and 1990s I used to go on the home end at United away games on occasion, if a mate I knew supported that team. People used to applaud good pieces of opposition play (check out the the Blackburn fans when Le Tissier bagged goal of the season in 1994-5. All that is in the past now.

When we were kids we figured out that you could get into games free as St John's Ambulance. Went to a couple of meetings at the Methodist Chapel on Sharrow Lane, got the kit and badge and fucked it off. The way to do it was to walk into the ground at St Johns, then either disappear onto the terraces or hang around pitchside. Did that for an FA Cup semi at the Sty, I think it was Wolves v Spurs. There was loads of trouble with fans invading the pitch etc. Luckily I didn't attend the Liverpool v Forest game.

Spurs v wolves was an overcrowding issue I think who’d have thunk it about the sty ehh
They may have been crowd trouble but I think mostly it was a safety problem and coppers realising it was dangerous let em sit on side of pitch
Thank god they got that problem sorted before anything major happened

I’ll be honest here , back then
I never got the “ fierce “ rivalry between both Sheffield clubs or the aggro it generated back then as most of us went to school knocked around with some of them
My mother / father and younger brother all followed the dark side , but being off Norfolk park hearing the roar from Lane in my yoof I knew where I wanted to go
Into 80’s moved over here and used to regularly come over for matches at BDTBL
In all that time meeting Man City , Everton , Liverpool and Manure fans , never any hassle they slagged me off for supporting a 4th 3rd division team but all good natured
It was only when I bumped into the Pigs playing away at midland that got for a kicking
Since then Fuck em ,
you want to go to watch em every other week feel free and be my guest
but please don’t come on here talking about the club most of us love and adore in the same breath as them cunts saying we should be doing this that , or the other ,
I for one will pass over most of the half & half brigades posts and treat em with scorn

The last time I went to a match at Hillsborough was Boxing Day (I think) 1987. They were beaten 1-0 by Liverpool. This was slightly problematic for me as although I was disinterested in the results of Wednesday's matches I had, and still do have, a fierce and largely irrational dislike of Liverpool FC.

I went to Hillsborough a few times in the 80s, and I know I'm not the only Blade who did so. I've recounted before that there was a game in 1985 when I was one of 50,000 on their ground when they beat Manchester United. That was 30,000 more fans than attended their previous or subsequent home league games which goes to show their claims of their own supposedly historical levels of support are built on the myth that away fans, neutrals and Blades (such as me) are somehow part of their Massive (TM) fan base.

So a variation on the theme, I played Sunday league football with the majority of the team good friends and Wednesday fans. One player worked for Wednesday, and got hold of their previous seasons away kit for us to play in (so at least not blue and white, but purple). So several of us Blades, played a full season in actually worn Wednesday kits, although one sewed his own United badge on his kit. It did not really bother me, and having moved away I am glad to avoid the stick when we lose. However, I still can not shake off wanting Wednesday to lose.

I once stood on the Wednesday kop and witnessed a last minute equalizer by Geoff Salmons for Chesterfield.
I once sat on their North Stand (free ticket) and witnessed them get a 3-0 hammering by WBA.
I once stood on their kop and saw them beat Man U 1-0, witnessing a remarkable performance from full-back Roland Nilsson.
I've never celebrated or cheered a goal scored by Wednesday.

Just had a flashback to a Prem game in the 1990s (might have been Newcastle). I was sat in the south stand with my dad, and this proper rum looking lad with Owls tattoos sat next to us. He said he was there because it was Sheffield versus the incomers, and he’d jumped the gates.

Never figured out if he wanted to join in an all Sheffield scrap against the away mob or what. Was that ever a thing?

I was also at that game, brother-in-law was a pig fan and had a spare ticket, and at that time, Liverpool were a force to be reckoned with, so I went to see them. First and only time I have been to see the pork, apart from derby games.

I was sat amongst them all, but couldn't help but jump up and cheer, every time Liverpool scored. Grobbelaar swinging on the cross bar, to pass time, as if he was bored.

Think a little nuance is needed. You don't have to slate the bloke rotten for doing summet he wants to do and hammering him on social media is unnecessary (although fully expected).

However as a Blade I really couldn't think of anything worse. Paying money to sit in a shit ground surrounded by people who hate my club is not my idea of a good time.

And they all smell.

I think I've only been to hillsborough 3 times - once for a derby, once in the away end to watch Newcastle in the early 90s and once I was dragged along to watch them draw 0-0 with Barnsley in Division 2. I didn't put any of these trips on twtter.

Thinking back to that Newcastle game it's amazing to think we just bought 8 tickets on the day to a Premier league away game.

I only recall being at two SWFC Home Reserve games not involving SUFC. Both because it was a convenient time to also go to the Box Office to get tickets for the Derby. Once before the 1971 nil nil (nabbed tickets in the cantilever). Once before the 1979 0-4 (nabbed tickets in the South Stand).

I was also fascinated by the Peter Swan saga/story. Went to a few SWFC home games when his ban was up & he made a comeback of sorts.

Went to see Pele play as well (Wednesday v Santos).

You should have been on their Kop ( 1971), with the massed ranks of Blades.

He's become so obsessed with his fake hatred of Wednesday that he now won't leave the house as, living in Sheffield, he knows that some people he sees will be "pig fans" & he wouldn't be able to stand the sight of them. It's no life for him. But, that's what he wants.

We wind him up that maybe the Sainsbury's delivery guy, or the Deliveroo chap, or his postie, or his binman, are "pig fans" and he'd better knock them off as well.

1960s? No idea. Wendy finished 6th in 1962, 63 and 1964, 8th in 1965, 17th in 1966 so I looked at the results for the 1965-66 season but none of the teams we played away to in April or May were Wendy's rivals for the drop. In 1966-67 both Sheffield clubs finished in the middle of the table. Most definitely not 1967-68 season because both clubs were in danger of relegation in the last few weeks of the season

I went to Hillsborough a few times over the years, apart from when supporting the Blades there. Mostly because living in Ecclesfield most of my school mates were W#ds fans & I was allowed to go to their games with them but not to Bramall Lane on my own, until I was 12 or so. I went willingly to see Pele when Santos came to town, & I remember going to watch Man Utd, primarily Best, Law & Charlton, hoping they would give them a pasting, which unfortunately didn't happen.
I also played in a game at Hillsborough before someone's testimonial in the 90's, can't remember the player, but I found out half an hour before the game we were wearing a W#ds kit, so threw a wobbler & refused to wear it, so ended up playing in goal & wearing one of my Blades badges pinned on the chest.

When I was a kid (four onwards) me dad took me to a match every Saturday. Always the blades if at home but otherwise Wednesday Rov Chessie Donny Notts County(he liked Tony Hateley and the wooden bench seating) he just liked a day watching football with his lad. Same if there were mid week games. Never wanted Wednesday to win - but in the sixties they had some decent players so often did - but did cheer on the other local teams. With my son it was Blades at home and if arsed away, or sat watching Jeff. I think we both missed out. Shame.
