0-1: Some decent passing by WBA. Koren passes it short up to Bednar, who plays it out wide, and then meets the cross with a good header.

It is Kilgallon who closes Bednar down when he receives it back to goal first time. He loses him when the cross comes in, so obviously Killa must take most of the blame for this goal.

WBA's movement is good and if the crosser had aimed for the penalty spot, there's a good chance Koren also would have had and unchallenged finish, so Killgallon is not the only one who loses his man here.

There's been comments about Taylor, but he's supposed to pull in centrally when the ball is first played up to Bednar. He has no time to close down the crosser and would have needed help by our left midfielder (was it Ward who was out there at the time?)

1-2: A disappointing goal to concede, and again it is Killgallon who's clumsy or not strong enough to stop Bednar. Their goalkeeper hits a long free kick, Bednar outmuscles Killa and fires past Bunn.

Having said that, our defensive line is all wrongly positioned. When the ball is hit up to Bednar/Killa for them to challenge, there are two outcomes:

  • Killa wins it
  • Bednar wins it
When those two are isolated in a challenge, our defence should prepare and cover for the worst possible outcome. They don't. Morgan especially, and also Walker and Taylor should have taken up a position behind the challenge to allow them to sweep up if Killa loses out.

THIS is why I think our coaching staff must also take some blame for this goal. Good organisation and defensive positioning is supposed to compensate for individual mistakes.

Bergen, good analysis. Strength is Killa's biggest weakness. He's a similar physique to Bromby and neither of them are strong enough when they play 'old fashioned' centre forwards.

So, in conclusion, every player should be everywhere, all the time?:header::hug:

Nice av btw:thumbup:

With a bit of luck anyone watching that defending will realise Killa's not worth a Prem place and he'll stay with us, without making similar cock-ups.

spot on that hansen bergen

four against one for the second goal and kilgallon definelty switched off for the first

dont let raul put you off he will have been too busy trying to start a mexican wave to notice :nana::nana::nana:

Yes, the defensive line was threadbare and it was all too easy to score.
A goal a pub team would have expected to defended against.

Interesting stuff as usual Bergen.

Can you explain to me where our goalkeeper is in the above picture?

I totally agree that defenders should be covering but my opinion is that our defenders were for some reason a bit surprised by the length of the clearance. Bednar read the flight earlier and got in position first and from then it was always going to be a clear chance or red card.

But where the hell is Bunn? I don't recall seeing him back track so his starting position is on the goal line like the kid at school who is useless and forced in net to just stand on the line all game.

In my opinion he could have presented more of a barrier to Bednar if slightly further out to start with.

Even with his pace I don't think Walker could have got back for that one.
Morgan was probibly just too far away to get back too.
Taylor and Killa should have dealt with it as it was their side of the pitch.

Seems fairly simple to me, the defence were relying on Killa to do what he should have and stay goal side of Bednar.

Killa could then have won the ball or kept Bednar with his back to goal, with our defence in an acceptable position.

Half a second after he can be spotted on the six yard line, so may not have been completely rooted to the line. It's also a general rule that he shall not get involved if a defender and a striker are competing for the ball, but he backs off a bit rather than coming out to attack Bednar when he gets free of Kilgallon.

We have to remember that paddy came off his line in the defeat at Swillsborough last October and it was a bad decision

I think the length of the kick surprised our entire back four, but that is not an excuse. They were all back there, ready and waiting, and still watched the ball sail over them without getting back to cover.

That's true but I think it was the right decison to come for that cross - just the wrong outcome. Morgan was amazed that Kenny actually decided to come for something. I seem remember Kenny did something daft just before the goal as well.

If anyone's bothered, may I just stress that I do not attach any fault to Bunn for the second goal and totally agree with Bergen that a keeper should not be getting involved in that situation where a defender is competing for the long ball - but I do think ideally a keeper should be slightly further out to start with

it's all should have/could have/would haves tbh.
They didn't defend well for it and it can't be changed, only not repeated in the future.

The ball was ther for Killa to clear which he didn't.

Bunn's decision is correct in my opinion. Kilgallon doesn't need to win the ball - he only needs to stay goal side of Bednar. If he does that, and Bunn stays on his line, there's no danger, because Bednar won't have the freedom to get close enough to trouble Bunn. If Bunn comes out, Bednar can just stay goal side of Kilgallon and lob both of them.

The problem is simply that Kilgallon thinks he can win it, so goes for the ball rather than concentrating on staying goal side. Morgan did exactly the same thing in the first half, and the ball went over his head, but fortunately on that occasion the West Brom striker's finish was poor.

If Carson has an unusually long kick, we should surely have known that from our preparation for the game?
