Can anyone provide the statistics as to the number of goals we have scored towards the end of matches as against the number conceded , compared to the same figures for Norwich and Leeds ?

Without having any evidence to support it , I have an general impression that we have probably conceded more than we have scored and that in respect of the other two , the opposite is the case .

If this impression is correct , it must surely have had a significant effect on our relative points totals and cannot be simply a matter of coincidence . I would be interested to learn what these comparisons are and to hear members views as to why this has been the case .

You're right. Doesn't make for good reading.

Norwich
GF: 29
GA: 13
GD: +16

Leeds
GF: 19
GA: 7
GD: +12

Blades
GF: 13
GA: 15
GD: -2

FM . That's much worse than I had in mind .

What timescale are those figures based on . Last 10 , last 15 ?

On a quick count up we have dropped 19 points in games where at some point we have been in the lead. If we had closed half of these games out we would be laughing, I know some are unavoidable but we do have a tendency to score then panic and retreat rather than keep the pressure on teams to get a second goal Swansea, Stoke and the Millwall game spring to mind. It is as if the team thinks the job is done after they score in some games and decide to sit back and stroll about.

I wonder if it is anything to do with the 'importance of getting the first goal' that CW often talks about?
Stats show how important it is to get the first goal, but that's only part of it.
I'd guess that the stats also show that the teams that gets the first goal goes on to win because they continue to push on, or are very good at protecting the lead.
We have done both on occasions, but have been found lacking, particularly at closing out games and that, I think, has been the difference.
Maybe our players are so fixated at getting the first goal that psychologically they think the job is all but done when they get it?

Striking stats. The analysis is above my pay grade. One basic distinction to make is goals scored when losing and goals conceded when winning. I have the impression that Leeds and Norwich have been losing more often than us going into the last 15 minutes. They have both been good at grabbing late equalisers/winners. Perhaps they have better individual players, more capable of breaking down packed defences. We struggle to do that, so the first goal is more important for us. Perhaps?

That is grim reading. Don't see how we remedy that either with 4 games to go, our confidence must be so brittle going into the last 15 minutes of games.

The amount of games where we've been in control, taken the lead and proceeded to completely panic is pathetic.

It happens against everyone, not just the best teams. We forget how to pass to each other and end up just smashing the ball as hard as we can upfield. This results in constant pressure and mistakes, which inevitably leads to conceding goals.

It's fucking embarassing and confusing in equal measure.

I think it says a lot about our game management and tactical substitutions in the last phase of games as well as player fitness and mindset. 1-0 up on Saturday and we make two defensive substitutions changing shape for the umpteenth time. Weeds on Saturday 1-0 up make like for like subs, keep their shape and see out the game comfortably.

How many times this season have we finished the game this season with a number 10 on the pitch? When Duffy goes off its either for a defender or midfield player to revert to a flat three. Changing like for like doesn't disrupt the flow of the team and seems to work for Norwich and Weeds maybe we should consider doing it in the last four games.

That's probably what happens when you bring defenders on every single time you have a 1 goal lead.

Without wishing to self reference, I’ve said it before & i’ll say it again, when we score first, it’s vital we push on and get the second. Alters the whole complexion of proceedings. Even when we see out a 1-0 win we expend needless physical & mental energies, getting over the line.

Could you also how the results were affected by those late goals in the last 15,favourably or unfavourably.

Think I'm missing one goal against but overall we're well down (12 points gained, 16 lost in the last 15 plus stoppage time). Notably, for me anyhow, is that our late goals have dried up - only two since the new year.

Norwich (H) W2-1 Sharp 90+3 +2pts
Preston (H) W3-2 McGoldrick 87 +2pts*
Millwall (A) W3-2 McGoldrick 79p, 88 +3pts
Blackburn (A) W2-0 Sharp 79 n/a
Rotherham (A) D2-2 Basham 85 +2pts*
Reading (A) W2-0 Sharp 82, S Baldock 86og +2pts
Derby (H) W3-1 Clarke 84 n/a
Blackburn (H) W3-0 Sharp 77, McGoldrick 82 n/a
Norwich (A) D2-2 Sharp 79 +1pt
Brentford (H) W2-0 McGoldrick 84 n/a

Swansea (H) L1-2 Dhanda 85 -1pt
Bristol (H) L0-1 Watkins 82 -1pt
Preston (H) W3-2 Robinson 80, Johnson 82 -2pts*
Derby (A) L1-2 Marriott 77 -1pt
Rotherham (A) D2-2 Proctor 90+2 -2pts*
Leeds (H) L0-1 Hernandez 82 -1pt
West Brom (H) L1-2 Gibbs 76 -1pt
Aston V (A) D3-3 Mings 82, Abraham 86, Green 90+4 -2pts
Bristol C (H) L2-3 Weimann 77, 82 -3pts
Millwall (H) D1-1 Cooper 90+5 -2pts

*McGoldrick restored our lead against Preston, cancelling out the lost points from Robinson & Johnson's goals. Same for Rotherham away when Proctor equalised Basham's late goal.

I don’t like to answer my own questions, but in the 05/06 season, we scored 17 times in the last 10 mins of games and conceded 7. Winners find a way.

Great information .

When I posed the question , I was mentally reflecting on the effect of his substitutions as compared to ours this season . From memory , they almost always seemed to have a positive effect and your figures bear this out .

Had that been the case this year , we would be home and dry by now and it is an important aspect of management which CW clearly needs to improve upon .

Better way would be points gained and lost in that time.

We conceded late goals in a few games like Villa at home (i think), but we still won the game 4-1

Villa (H) wasn't a late goal: I think it was on 65 mins or so.

I said on Saturday night that it must be unusual for a team still in with a chance of auto promotion with 4 games to go to concede so many late goals and score so few late winners. It’s usually something associated with teams fighting relegation. It had it down to the way we play(ed) and us running out of steam, but it seems it’s more complicated than that.

The stats probably look worse because we have lead more often than Norwich and Leeds going into the last 15 and so don't need to score so many late goals as they do
