Goal celebrating...

Did anyone else think that all three goal celebrations by our players were a bit muted?
No wild fist pumping after sprinting across the pitch, jusr a steady jog up and a pat on the back.

Just me?

We were scoring against a promoted team we should be beating easily. Get it quietly.

The first goal was really weird, very muted response from players and fans. I think the crowd was geared up to boo on the half time whistle and were taken by surprise when it went in. The two others were a bit more normal.

maybe it’s reflected by the overall disconnect between fans, manager and players…

The fans aren’t that bothered about this group of players, how many of the players have their own songs? How many of the players do fans get genuinely excited by?

And the fans appear to be getting more and more bored and tired of the manager

Just think it’s all very muted at the Lane in general. There’s a strong smell of negativity stinking the place out.

I saw a video of thousands of Stoke fans at Bolton on Saturday absolutely belting out Delilah and struggled to remember the last time we as a fanbase sold out one of those massive away ends and went mental like they were. Looked and sounded amazing.

My theory is that we have no likeable players at all. I respect them because they play for us but I don’t like-like them. The last time I was ever in this position was around the Adkins years. Sad state of affairs.

We could do with a home game soon where we have an arse of a player or ref that riles the fans up. And we manage to overcome it and win.

Think generally though the stuff off the pitch and lack of good moves inwards has put a dampener on the club.

If we can pick up more results and see improved performances then things should also change a bit.

I also think there is an element of the fan base that because of our current situation are actually wanting a reason to boo and maybe get on Wilders back.

I think the atmosphere at Bramall Lane has been pretty flat for a while now - not just this season. Many people don't even join in with GCB or talk through it and this all adds to the apathy that seems to have descended on the place - and continues through the match.
There's very little encouragement for the team if they're struggling or even more so when they go a goal down. Just when support would help, it seems little is forthcoming and it needs a controversial incident to get the crowd going.
As for walking out early (not just Bramall Lane), it seems a lot of fans can't wait to exit - either when a team is comfortably winning or hopelessly losing.
I didn't rush to leave after the final whistle on Saturday but there weren't many United fans left when the team started their lap of 'honour' - which I didn't hang around for as I had a train to catch.
However, looking on the slightly brighter side, I think the away support is holding together reasonably well.

Maybe our attention spans are at fault and we have too many distractions - like me earlier - BBC Breakfast on, mobile phone could go off at any moment and trying to post this! In the old days (not necessarily all good) you went to the game, watched it with no access to other matches and the first news of other scores etc was when you bought a Green Un or heard the results on the radio after arriving home.

Down to 2 Nah’s at the end of the GCB now before the oooh which makes it really hard for me to join in. I refuse to be cowed in adopting the same behaviour but I also look like a mad man singing on my own to complete the song properly.

I always stick around for the victory lap (bar Saturday as Mrs was early to Waitrose for our lift). I don’t blame anyone who doesn’t though - it takes far too long. Should be done and dusted a minute or two after full time.

Atmosphere was very flat on Saturday overall though. This season has largely become a write off before it even started thanks to boardroom antics and the threat of a deduction which doesn’t seem to be going away. The most excitement we can reasonably hope for is a successful battle against relegation if we get dragged in.

Couple that with the opposition and it felt more like an early stage cup match than a league fixture.

I don’t buy all this though about “no connection with the players” etc. True there aren’t many stand out players in there who would get you off your seat, but if this team put a run together you’d suddenly see people talking about having a ‘connection’ again. Terms like “connection” and “identity” are often just terms thrown around when your team has lost a few games and you are annoyed by it.

I'd just got up from my seat .......to put the kettle on for a half time cuppa when the first goal went in and my first reaction was ....fuck me we've scored, no cheering, no fist pumping then proceeded to kitchen to make the brew.

Three from my row (V in the South Stand in Gangway G) went to the toilet not long before the first goal and all three missed the goal. It was the same for McDonagh Blade too!

That's why I always take 2 plastic bottles to games. One empty and one with drinking water. Though I do get them mixed up sometimes.

Alongside unlikeable players we’ve just reached the end of a cycle where naturally the club is in abit of a (ahem!!!) trough.

2016 was the beginning of the cycle, first prem year was the peak, and since then it’s been a decline.

Usually I’d be upbeat about the beginning of a new cycle but fear our rejuvenation maybe a while off yet. Not as bad as 6 years in League One, but some lower Champ stagnation with the threat of relegation on our backs and too close for comfort.

That’s unless we offload wilder and reset the club sooner rather than later.

And from the fans I was so bored first half that I didn't even get up for the first goal

Although a bit of a piss take chant even Chris Porter managed to get a chant for himself when at the lane in our League one days.
There is a massive split now, you have the players and fans split/disconnect, you have the pro and anti Wilder split within the fan base. You have the board & Wilder/Bettis and fan disconnect. It's far from Ronseal (United)

Yes, even after the long International break, meeting up with friends in the pub usually elicits a certain level of pre-game excitement. Well, it took the three of us a good hour and half before anyone even mentioned the game…I‘ve not really felt this level of apathy about SUFC for a long time.

Not notice the difference in celebration between Bamford with his 1st and second? Slightly embarassed by shin/ankle finish for the 1st, delighted by the volley for the 2nd.

You’re not the only one.

It’s a new squad, give it time. I’ve got a feeling we’re going up this season. Don’t know why but just have this niggling feeling we’re guna win at Wembley this year.
I’ll have some of what you’re having

We moved seats this year mainly due to being fed up with the guy sat next to me who insisted on only watching around 25 minutes of each half and going twice to loo in middle of that. Wouldn't be so bad if he had an isle seat but he was virtually bang in middle of row. From my new vantage point I saw him go up and down the stairs 6 times on Saturday. With a wry smile, at best he saw all 3 goals from the concourse.

🤣🤣, I think the team has a lot to offer once it clicks. Lots of good CV’s in the team. Won 3-0 against a tricky team and not got Philips, Seriki, Burrows any where it. Also we have wilder who’s done wonder for this club so got a great manager charge

Why not, eh?

Hull did it.

Currently making a decent fist of it in the top division.

Coventry did well yesterday against Newcastle.

Neither of these were parachute teams.

At least with 8 places you can be pretty abject for a good period and still be in with a shout.

If you think of our squad in the rising years 16-20 we'd recruited younger players whose careers were on an upward trajectory.
You could see in their faces they were honoured & delighted to be here and determined to be a success both individually & collectively.

In contrast , if you recruit the older pros , it's just a job for them.
Their careers have been & gone.

It's human nature to like & wish success for those who have potential and are working hard to maximise it and make their way in the game.
Such as Cooper , Seriki , McCallum , Peck , Blaster , Donovan , Oné ,
With apologies to those I've missed.
They could be our future.

Once the balance tips between ambitious youngsters & short-term old pros , your future diminishes ,
Or could even fall off a cliff - see summer '27.
