That’s because they’re contractors, not employees. I’m not a qualified accountant (unless you count my AAT basic certificate) but I’m self employed and I could set up a company and pay myself a wage or dividends but I’m a sole trader and basically can’t be arsed. My mate who does the same as me but employs a couple of staff does it and did do since he started off on his own.
I’m guessing that’s what the contractors do although HMRC are always trying to prevent people who are in long term contracts from being a company. When I was self employed thirty years ago they were very strict on sub-contracting if you did regular work for one company, which I did and had to take on a couple more clients so it was all above board.
Still supposed to be difficult to get around working long term for one employer as a ‘contractor’ but there seem to be many getting away with it. IR35 wheezes are big business.
