Massive liability in the middle, poor marking, makes baffling runs out for challenges and is too easily muscled off the ball. He used to be a rock at the back but I think he's been in steady decline for a while now with more and more basic errors creeping in. i’ve been a bit on the fence with egan for a long time. Generally he’s fairly solid defensively but horrid on the ball and concedes possession constantly. So whilst limiting he was fairly reliable as a defender.

However these first 2 games i think he has been absolutely garbage. Was invisible for both goals today despite being less than a yard from the goal scorer. 2nd goal in particular was embarrassing. Throwing himself on the floor like a little princess to win a foul instead of battling. Not captain material for me at all. Needs to pull his shit together ASAP.

Just going to quietly bump this, he got done on both headers tonight, simple basics that every premier league defender should be able to do. Jack and Anel played well tonight.

He did. But otherwise played well. Unusually mistimed two crucial headers

Never been 100% Egan is amazing and the easy long ball undoes him a lot. That said not convinced he's the difference maker tonight

The way that we play Egan is usually the spare man, which is a good job because he has always been prone to ball-watching. Coaches will exploit this in the Premier League and he isn’t going to change at this stage of his career, so we need to ensure that he doesn’t find himself as the man-marker - but that’s easier said than done.

He can’t deal with physical strikers

I have seen this so often in the past - when Egan feels he can't match the striker in physique or strength , he avoids making the jump for the header - he simply hustles the striker (risking a pen) but doesn't even try to win the ball - and when he's outmuscled he tries to win a foul McBurnie style.
We know his pace isn't great and he's vulnerable to the ball over the top.
Opposition managers just have to play their biggest beast and chuck aerial balls in

Drop him for trusty and play anel down middle

One of the positions we have failed to recruit is competition for Egan which is better than Bash
(ie Bash coming in for Anel and Anel doing CCB which he did very well v Spurs)
The other switch is a straight swap Trusty for Egan , leaving Anel on R.
Making Egan captain when he faces no real competition leads to complacency - I hope PH has a word with him

But Anel v Palace and Scabs this season has been just as bad. Don't know why he gets away with obviously poor performances.

Egan starts every season off the pace, physically and mentally. I can't be the only one who notices this, but he always gets better and better as the season progresses and is normally quite solid.

Let's not be wanting to bin the club captain, and seasoned international after a couple of bad results.
