As I understand it, we only gave Super-Mac a one year contract when he joined us in August (?). Given that he has been by far the most construvtive midfielder for us since McCall (IMO), should we be ensuring that his talents are used to help us get promotion to the Premiership next season?

I would place extra value and emphasis on this than looking for other players this JTW. I would hate to see him leave if we failed to secure his services for longer.

Am I wrong or have I missed something?

I think you're correct on this one. Fairly sure he is on a one-year deal. We'd be foolish not to get him signed up asap. Given that by rights from now he can sign a pre-contract with another club.

Good point Hodgyman, thought of the same yesterday. McDonald is Premiership quality on the ball and seems to be improving his fitness. We must address this as soon as possible, because other clubs will be lurking.

Premiership my arse ,solid championshipship at best ,no real pace and no great chaser of lost causes. He's good at this level but let's not get carried away ,he's where he is for a reason.

Eh? When I said "Premiership quality on the ball" I wasn't commenting on his ability of chasing lost causes. Everybody knows he's got weaknesses defensively.

Edit: Thanks moDtheGod!

he's where he is for a reason.

Indeed. And he's on a 1 year contract for a reason too. With his past misdemeanours and United's lowly position it suits both parties.

But now he's playing so well in a team that suits his skills, it's time to reward him and insure ourselves against losing out on the player he could become.

Sign him up Danny.

It would amount to gross negligence by the club if they did not make an attempt to extend his contract

MacD agreeing to a further contract tho is another thing.

So how many Premiership players are just paid to be good in the ball , I would be pleased to see him signed but people can be built up to be something they're not and its then that as a club wed lose out and get priced out Sign him by all means but at our price and for his real value

Nobody is saying we should pay him massive wages or that Premier League players are only paid for their technical ability on the ball. Bergen just said that his ability on the ball is of Premiership standard. Is that SO difficult to grasp? He has obvious deficiencies in other areas, that are - presumably - the reasons that he isn't in the Premier League earning massive wages.

>Premiership my arse
macdonald has the best touch of any player we've had for the last ten years.. he creates space out of nothing.. the body dummy he did that sent the entire yeovil defence the wrong way for our third(?) goal was worth the admission fee.. ok he doesnt' tackle or run around much.. otherwise he wouldn't be here.. neither did TC if memory serves

Love it when people accuse me of not grasping things then completely miss the point I am making.

Ive said sign him so I`m agreeing with the OP ,what I am saying is dont build him up to be something hes not, hes basically a good "footballer" ie he can play a good pass and see an opening which makes him an asset to the squad, what he isnt is a grafter off the ball ,if the balls not at his feet he may as well not be there.Which is ok against the likes of Bury who had nothing to offer Saturday but in the heat of the Charlton game etc he runs the risk of being a waste of a shirt.
Sign him by all means but dont go overboard on the praise please.

As for TC dont even talk about him in the same breath .. and if you think TC coudnt tackle then quite frankly no ... your memory doesnt serve.

>what he isnt is a grafter off the ball
i don't give a monkeys about grafting off the ball (see various monty arguments)

>and if you think TC coudnt tackle
you've misconstrued the point.. the point was he wasn't in for his tackling ability.. he had trevor hockey/mick speight to do that for him

Who has missed your point? The point that you made was to not build him up into something he isn't. Not one person in this thread has done that.

One person said that his ability on the ball (one small aspect of a footballer's game) is Premier League class, but that he was lacking in other areas. I hardly think that counts as "building him up to be something he's not".

I think we would be pushing to give him a new deal if he was banging goals in as that would be bringing him into the market place. So far he's been pretty much linking play rather than being all about actual assists (as I recall, not based on any stats) and maybe if he can up his returns in the more vital areas then there'd be more noise from the Club about extending his deal. Personally I love what he brings to the team, but I would worry that he'd not find the time and space in a higher division.

>So far he's been pretty much linking play rather than being all about actual assists
well cressy's goal is one assist i can think of right now

After all that has been said, should we offer him an extended contract or not?
