George Long, WHERE IS GEORGE LONG?

I wondered where he was a few times last season especially on long range efforts, some of which even me built like the fuckin fridge would have got to.

Can you recall any specific incidents? I thought his shot stopping was generally pretty good. Remember one outstanding save from a free kick (think it was home to Cov) thinking “Howard would have had no chance with that”. Think he also saved 3 penalties last season which is pretty good going.

There were unstoppable efforts he conceded, that really you can't give any blame to him for.
The Riley one for Bury sticks in my head, right out of the top drawer.

That was almost always down to the defence not closing down, not the fault of Long. Give them a chance for a pot shot and with our luck they'll hit a 1 in a 100 ball that will go right in the top bin.

Rochdales 1st away is the one that comes to mind first probably because we battered them up to their first and their keeper made a string of fine saves. I might be being a little harsh on George, could be the fact that there was no closing down in midfield that led to a deluge of goals conceded from outside the box. Either way it's something that's got to improve. His reactions and general shot stopping are good. It's just the command of his area and the amount he seems to get beat from outside the box that need working on, the former probably will develop with age and a leader in the ch position. The latter with a midfield who can actually move and a bit of coaching. Agree regarding penalties seems to be good keeping them out. I think George is a decent keeper who will get even better with age. Was a bit of a joke post tbh Dane but still uncomfortable with the amount of long range efforts we let in. I will be keeping a close eye on things this season and if things don't improve I'm starting a dedicated thread on this very subject

The midfielders should be close enough to close them down if the defence start doing it regularly that leaves holes for the opposition to exploit.

There's a few shots here. Music is a bit dodgy though.......

That reel shows just how many times he got us out of jail last season. It also shows a few decent takes from crosses which is an area of his game that is often criticised. I thought he was improving in both command of his box and distribution last season. Hopefully he continues to develop those areas whilst maintaining his impressive shot-stopping.

Beyond fecking parady.
A double hernia, fucked knees, 5 loan clubs, more breakdowns than a green flag switchboard on a January snowy day, an average of just 10 games a season over a 5 year period and he gets a three year contract here .
Any wonder why I replied to the Adkins worst manager thread.
Un fecking believable.
can't blame Adkins for that surely. Clough signed him and in the interview just after was asked about the known fitness issues of Wallace and just brushed them aside saying he'd passed his medical.

That's why they should press as a unit. There's always gaps between defence and midfield, once they're past the midfield the defence have to press as one - if they try to slip a player into one of the gaps they should be offside if they press as one.

There will be an interesting one of Longs fuck ups somewhere ,btw ,I heard on good authority the contract dilemma he had. He had supposedly agreed a 5 k contract before Wilder came ,Wilder said no chance heres one for 3k ,long said no chance Ive been offered 5k elsewhere ,Wilder said fair enough go ,Long came back when he realised his agent was full of shit and he had no offers and agreed to the 3k contract. Wilder said no that's no longer on the table heres one for 2.5k. Long signed it.

I heard on very good authority.....that your 'very good authority' is talking 8ollox. :)

Go on then tell me where its wrong because its a pretty close source.

Close to wilder ,not to Long ,so I suppose you choose which side to believe.

Personally I would believe both, however as I said your 'close to Wilder' is not close enough. Think about it, if 5K in league 1 had been agreed, then the contract is sorted and he is on 5k a week, which would be astonishing for league 1 particularly a 22 year old keeper.

If 5K in league 1 was 'offered' I imagine said player/agent would have bitten the clubs hand off before they had time to say it never crossed the line.

However this is a sort of futile discussion and I'll stick with my source and I have no doubt you shall stick with yours.

I'd say George is a lucky boy if he's on £125000 a year .

Adkins was offering contracts out in desperation though it seemed ,Hammond in case ,and if it is to be believed ,Woodford Sammon and Baptiste were on big money.

I have it on good authority woodford was worth a packet of crisps a week and not even walkers

I've kept cards close to my chest on this, but I really don't rate long.

Adkins had a verbal agreement with Long and his agent on a contract worth around 5k per week . At the time a number of clubs were interested in Long , with tentative enquires by Huddersfield and Burnley . A few other clubs were interested from the press side , but this was speculation.

The club ( Wilder ) offered far less with a take it or leave it senorio . No other club was interested with Long ( which sums his performances up for me ) .

He is on a low wage around £2.5K per week with add ons .

His he worth more - no. . Adkins idea of wages was not pro rata to quality. Poor judgement.

Sitters was correct in his post.

I am fully aware of that., as I said he got given a 3 yr contract.
Just amazed that anyone thinks Adkins was the worst manager we ever had.
You're right about that, there are so many others more deserving of that particular accolade; Robson, Heath, Haslam, Peters, Weir, Adams....
