Can't blame George for trying to wangle the best deal possible. This is as good as it gets for a bang average keeper. He's equivalent to a McEveley between the sticks.

His agent must be looking for a club that hadn't seen him play then.

Don't understand what's going on as he's too expensive to be a number two so if Wilder doesn't rate him highly enough to be number one we should let him go. Otherwise he's gonna take up a reasonable wage sat on the bench which is part of what got us into this mess in the first place !

Clearly we don't want him to go on a free but Wilder has twice seemingly set a deadline which has been extended both times.Maybe his agent knows he's going and wants us to release him so he can negotiate a signing on fee so is drawing the whole thing out as long as possible hoping we do just release him.

Surely a fee is payable because of his age? He's not worth much though.

So your boss comes to you and says, "Thanks for all you've done. You've contributed well to the company and I've noted how much you've applied yourself and the experience you've gained on the job will be an asset to us. So, what I'd like to offer you by way of thanks and as an incentive for you to stay with us is a reduced amount of money in line with how I want to manage my finances going forward"
Snatch his hand off George. A bright young first team goalkeeper like you, you'd be a mug to not accept a pay cut.

If only he'd done anything close to the first few sentences you mentioned.

How many more times the contract has to be improved terms or the player can go for free, we will have a improved offer on the table to make sure we get compensation should he go elsewhere

So he hasn't applied himself PB. And you know how hard he trains?
He hasn't gained any experience since the start of the season?
Best send your 'player of the year' award back George.
You're simply not worth it.

If he's not going to be first choice then it's best for him to move on, and probably get more money to be someone else's backup. But with the amount of time this is taking maybe he doesn't have the other options he was rumoured to.

Nail=Head.

I've no idea how hard he trains, you just added that one in, I doubt you do either.

He's done ok, but no more than that.
He's improved since the season before, but he needed to, he was terrible.

He's a decent shot stopper, still struggles with long range shots, still unable to command the 6 yard area, still makes basic errors.

If I'd played in the awful teams of the last couple of seasons I could probably have won Player of the Year too.

To be fair to George, we don't know what the contract he has been offered is and what the problem is. Maybe he's been offered reduced terms and its just been offered so that we get compensation if he leaves. Or maybe he doesn't want to stay if he knows that Smith is coming or someone else. Personally I think we can do better than Long but if he goes I wish him well.

Well for me I think we might be kidding ourselves if we think we are going to be able to just pick up a keeper cheaply that won't be prone to errors.
All keepers make errors, and they only improve through experience. Most keepers don't reach their prime until their late 20's.

So although he hasn't been a star, I don't think he's been terrible either. His weaknesses can be rectified, and most of his issues are down to lacking confidence. But I think his biggest issue is him being unable to help his defence hold a higher line. He rarely comes out of his area effectively to clear that long ball in behind our defence which meant we struggled with playing a high line and pressuring opponents.
This could be because he's crap with his feet, I often think the better keepers were outfield players as kids and became keepers later on in their teens.

Let's see what happens, I want Long to stay and work at his game and then force his way to the top.

I like George but not as our first choice GK. I don't mind if he stays as number two or moves on to further his career. But he simply isn't, yet, what I would like our last line of defence to look like.

All these players have advisors/agents.

Some as young as 16 have agents when they are pushing their way from the youth team, so why wouldn't a 22 yr old keeper with over 100 games as a pro?

Some clubs bring kids from all over the world to their academy. Kids as young as 11/12. They move their whole family across, often employing their relatives in some capacity or finding them work so they can get their hooks on their son. Do you think someone in that situation doesn't have some form of advisor looking out for their interests? After all, they must be something special for clubs to go to such lengths so a little bit of groundwork when they are young will reap rewards for the advisor later on if they hit the big time.

I know a lad who is a keeper in the England set up...got in at 14. Agents are all over the place when he goes to his England set up.
