It is with sadness that SUFC have announced that another of our ex-players has recently died.
Geoff played in 9 league games in the great season of 1952/53 when we won the last major honour. This was the first season of watching United & I am missing the following programmes & if anybody wants to sell them please communicate.

8/9/52 - Brentford
18/4/53 - West Ham United
2/5/53 - Barnsley (County Cup)

Away: 3/9/52 - Everton
15/11/52 - Notts County
4/2/53 - Birmingham City (FA Cup)
21/2/53 - Blackburn Rovers
Hopefully in the near future I will complete writing a book of the memorable season.

Didn't realise Oxford had entered the league as early as that. I still think of them as a Jonny come lately club

Following my posting of yesterday I have ascertained that of the players who played in one or more matches of which there were 22 in total there are only 3 still living viz;-

FRED SMITH b. 7/05/1926 played 3 League games
DEREK HAWKSWOTH b 16/07/1927 played 42 League games
BILL WOOD b 28/12/1927 played 5 League games

Numerous supporters of my generation have contacted me to say that the team of 1952/53 was the best since the 2nd WW. All the 5 forwards each scored double figures!

Numerous supporters of my generation have contacted me to say that the team of 1952/53 was the best since the 2nd WW. All the 5 forwards each scored double figures!

We had two Fred Smiths in 1952. Fred A Smith (little Fred) played 3 games in the 1952/53 season and died in December 2005. Fred E Smith (Big Fred) moved to Manchester City in Summer 1952 and didnt play for us in the 1952/53 season. I hadnt realised Fred E Smith is still alive. Since Colin Collindridge's passing I had always thought that Derek Hawksworth is our oldest living player.

I remember Oxford United beating us either late sixties early seventies 1-2, and being mortified at what it had come to. They played in yellow/orange shirts black shorts and remember it being sunny. Strange the things you remember. Think Ron Atkinson was playing

Thanks Silent I didn't even know that video existed. That United team, despite the loss, was better than I remembered. That Sheffield United chant, repeated, goes back over 50 years. Thank you very much

67 years ago today was my first match at BDTBL as per photo for the programme relating to SUFC v West Ham United when we guaranteed promotion to Division 1 by winning 3-1 the scorers being Brook (2) & Browning in front of an attendance of 32,403 in our fiftieth Football League Season.

Rip Geoff Denial, saw you play numerous occasions in the reserves but no recollection of your first team appearances I'm sorry to say.
I'll bet you never forgot playing V Derek Dooley, when he was retuning from injury, sweeping you aside with his arm across your chest felling you to the ground and going on to score Such an obvious foul but the ref. went temporarily blind. But a good crowd that day.

Didn't realise the, (one group "Sheffield" other group "United") chant was chanted/sung as early as the 60's
Ted Hemsley was one of my favourite players, both in Football and Cricket. As a youngster I was amazed that a sportsman could be brilliant at 2 sports.
How fast was Woody?
My grandad took me to the Oxford game. A few months later he was dead. I always associate Oxford with my grandad, smell of tobacco and the taste of Bovril.
I remember him swearing, my parents never swore. I only found out he was a Wednesday fan recently, but his passion and choice language that day certainly hid that fact.
