The Speed knockers are starting to rev up their engines I see? Honeymoon period over?
Look, Speed is not to blame here. He is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't ... His two options are:
(a) keep the style of play used prior to his arrival. It might get us more wins and points but he'll get slaughtered for being the cheap option, doing it the same as Blackwell, Blackwell #2, a long ball merchant etc ...
(b) try to slowly implement a new style of play that will take time, might result in a few defeats we don't like, might see us struggle for a while and he gets slaughtered because we aren't winning ...
So it comes down to two things for me:
1. Am I willing to give the guy time?
Damn right I am. He has a respected name in football, will be able to use that name to get us favours, should have a name that will not get us punished every week (although we are doing - a Warnock/Blackwell hangover) and he was a complete midfielder. Work rate and destructive play, check, passing and attacking play, check. He knows what a good midfielder is because he was one. There is no way in this world that Speed honestly thinks the midfielders we have are good enough, he knows they're not. But what can he do? We have a tackler that is starting to fail to make a tackle on a 3-year contract on good money even though he can't pass water, we have another midfielder that other than having a knack of scoring the odd goal offers nothing to our play, a midfielder that was brought in in the summer because he had a good character but cannot pass, tackle, shoot and loses every midfield battle despite being six foot plus. He can't come out publically and slate them, can he? He deserves January and a chance to pull a few rabbits out of the hat (and he'll need to) and then a proper end of season and pre-season to implement his ideas and philosophy. The guy will be a good manager but he will make rookie mistakes early on like any manager would.
Do I want to see United passing the ball more and well respected in the football world?
Yes, I want United to win but I want to see us entertaining fans and even entertaining the neutrals as well. Speed is well liked in the game and that should help with a change of attitude towards United from elsewhere. Warnock - despite being an excellent manager - and Blackwell left us as a very disliked club - this impacts on us in many ways, i.e. loan signings, investment, referees. Speed has to be given chance to implement his ideas. Right now, he is like a Formula 1 driver in a Skoda - he's finding it tough, inevitably.
He may turn out to be a crap manager - I don't think he will whether its at United or elsewhere - but he has to be given time. That is crucial.
