Whilst accepting that you don't have to be an orator or have a degree in astro physics to be a football manager I don't think he comes accross well at all. Just been interviewed on RS, admittedly after a 3-0 defeat so couldn't be expected to appear chipper, but bloody hell the guy sounds ready to hang himself. Mumbled and stumbled through the interview, not angry like Warnock would have been, just appeared flustered and clueless. I would stick with him irrespective of the outcome this season and hope that he comes up trumps in the medium to long term. He was obviously a great player but doesn't come across as inspirational or have power of motivation judging by his radio interviews. I''d bet Chris Morgan would gee the troops up given the chance

What he says on the radio and in the dressing room will be totally different things. Personally I think it's refreshing to have a manager that doesn't attempt to blame everything but himself and the players.

Not really a lot he could've said about today imo.

Put it this way, the questions asked was putting him in a position to which he has just been punished for. He back tracked on them and gave a "FA" friendly answer. He doesn't want another ban!

He's beginning to realise that the club has got 1 of the worst reputations with Ref's and we are punished every game for it. He also knows that he needs to find some players that are endeared to Referee's to move his side forward. We currently have battlers, not endearers :(

Wouldn't disagree with both comments but notwithstanding the situation he doesn't come across well. At the end of the day he'll be judged by results

For me Gary Speed is not the problem!
The problems are:
Management: McCabe and Co have this aura of 'Good Business People' They're not they are like most people in the property game 'Lucky' at the time of boom and when the recession hits don't have a clue !
Their management of the club since relegation has been disasterous with gaff after gaff culminating in the shambles we have now!
Trevor Birch has managed one takeover Chelsea when he was obviously fortunate to find a Russian billionaire wanting to spend his dosh in the fashionable part of London on the back of Gullit, Vialli etc since then Bugger All - He has no charisma or communication skills to shout about and generally appears to have not contributed anything to the cause!
Players: Simply not good enough Montgomery, Quinn, Cresswell and Morgan all with new contracts that make them some of the best paid players in the Championship yet none of them are probably good enough to play at that standard!
Evans and Bogdanovic flatter to deceive yet pick up pay packets that would dwarf any supporters salary!
Speed has been hung out to dry by the management and left with a set of players who are simply not good enough!
Then we get idiots like Monty, Evans, Cresswell and Simonsen talking about play offs every wek in the Star!
Give me strength - the crew currently down at the Lane will be very, very lucky to stay up!
Stop conning us and Get real!
Its not Speed its the rest of the rubbish!

Top stuff, as usual Fiery, especially the lucky property developers bit.

Wouldn't it be the hugest of ironies, Mic, if they suddenly got luckier in, say, China now?:p

McCabe makes his own luck in the property game, thats why its easy ............. we'll get to know what he's up to when its too late !

The whole ethos at BDTBL is wrong or at least appears to be..... hence no new investors/buyers despite the Blades being touted all over the world for years.

Or, how about if Roman Abramovic suddenly decided a hotel on Bramall Lane was the ultimate, money no object purchase.

I agree with everything you say BB in general about McCabe but I aint having this stuff about McCabe being a genius. I know he sold to Valad at the perfect time, I will never, ever believe that deal but it happened. His remaining stuiff is as shafted as much as every other property developer's aint it?

hey up Mic ........................

he moved fast before the crash where he could ........ lots of tasty deals in conjuntion with the BOS on 'gold plated' property developments.......and some reight tasty dealing in China and others so i'm told.

I only wish i was as good as him in the property game......................... i can't sell owt i've got !

Fair enough BB, I value your opinion. No doubt McCabe is a big hitter in property. I'm only jealous.

Do you honestly believe that sale in Glasgow was on his own terms though?

Sumat behind the scenes perhaps........yer know ...you scratch my back....i'll scratch yours ! .....remember he works with a lot of bankers

Thing is these German lads who bought it won't have done a Valad - will they??!! You know Aussie press call it Invalid now?

Invalid :D...thats a gud un .............. as for Glasgow who knows ? but I only wish McCabe was as good in football as property Mic ........we'd be in the fookin Champions League ! :D

Personally, I think Speed comes across well in interviews. If the manager didn't sound depressed after a result like that I would be worried. Echoing what Wards said I find it refreshing that we finally have a manager that tries not to play the blame game so readily alla Warnock and Blackwell. At the end of the day ranting in a post match interview achieves nothing apart from bringing embarrassment to the club and adding to the already poor reputation we have in the football world.

At the end of the day Speed is a rookie manager learning his trade in an extremely difficult job, and at the moment I think he is presenting himself well. I know this isn't an anti Speed thread per say but I believe that at present we need to give Speed our full support and above all he needs time.

Personally I don't care how he comes across on the radio. I rather he be a good manager than a good orator (no sniggering at the back).

The Speed knockers are starting to rev up their engines I see? Honeymoon period over?

Look, Speed is not to blame here. He is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't ... His two options are:

(a) keep the style of play used prior to his arrival. It might get us more wins and points but he'll get slaughtered for being the cheap option, doing it the same as Blackwell, Blackwell #2, a long ball merchant etc ...

(b) try to slowly implement a new style of play that will take time, might result in a few defeats we don't like, might see us struggle for a while and he gets slaughtered because we aren't winning ...

So it comes down to two things for me:

1. Am I willing to give the guy time?
Damn right I am. He has a respected name in football, will be able to use that name to get us favours, should have a name that will not get us punished every week (although we are doing - a Warnock/Blackwell hangover) and he was a complete midfielder. Work rate and destructive play, check, passing and attacking play, check. He knows what a good midfielder is because he was one. There is no way in this world that Speed honestly thinks the midfielders we have are good enough, he knows they're not. But what can he do? We have a tackler that is starting to fail to make a tackle on a 3-year contract on good money even though he can't pass water, we have another midfielder that other than having a knack of scoring the odd goal offers nothing to our play, a midfielder that was brought in in the summer because he had a good character but cannot pass, tackle, shoot and loses every midfield battle despite being six foot plus. He can't come out publically and slate them, can he? He deserves January and a chance to pull a few rabbits out of the hat (and he'll need to) and then a proper end of season and pre-season to implement his ideas and philosophy. The guy will be a good manager but he will make rookie mistakes early on like any manager would.

Do I want to see United passing the ball more and well respected in the football world?
Yes, I want United to win but I want to see us entertaining fans and even entertaining the neutrals as well. Speed is well liked in the game and that should help with a change of attitude towards United from elsewhere. Warnock - despite being an excellent manager - and Blackwell left us as a very disliked club - this impacts on us in many ways, i.e. loan signings, investment, referees. Speed has to be given chance to implement his ideas. Right now, he is like a Formula 1 driver in a Skoda - he's finding it tough, inevitably.

He may turn out to be a crap manager - I don't think he will whether its at United or elsewhere - but he has to be given time. That is crucial.

but bloody hell the guy sounds ready to hang himself. Mumbled and stumbled through the interview,

You mean a bit like Sean O'Driscoll ?

O'Driscoll got critisism at Donny when he first went there...hope The Blades play like his teams in the near future.

I well remember the bile and abuse SO'D got on P&G not so long ago, e.g. "the bloke has no passion, he dun't jump up and down on the touchline", etc.

Funny thing, I'm sure Mark Robbins is copying Sean O D's interview style, even down to the sniffs and tone of voice:)
