Just heard from a fella who knows one of the grounds staff...

Pitch itself fine
Technical area and touchline area was the issue so off of the pitch itself

Again only what I was told not gospel

Not helped that it's still like 0 degrees outside. I think some don't know how cold it was last night, our heating at home kicked in twice. I expect its the same spot of the pitch someone else mentioned on this thread and the undersoil heating was not working or not working well enough to thaw it.

That said if this was a 3pm kick off it would have likely gone ahead.

Another reason to ditch these lunchtime kick offs at this time of the season at least.

They both called us "Sheffield" so not feeling sorry them at all. Hope they freeze on the way home 😉

Agreed, every time it's happened to me, despite my annoyance, I've managed to still refer to the hosts by their actual name. 🤣

Ooooo remembers Port Vale, yes, it wasn't called off, but they'll still get home quicker than I did that day...

Club statement doesn't acknowledge whether there has been a fault with the system, in which case assume it's just not fit for purpose
Or systems break unexpectedly from time to time regardless of what pre-planning is in place. It’s not always due to incompetence but maybe that’s a bit too nuanced for some of the service continuity managers on here.

Club statement.

The referee was called to Bramall Lane this morning with parts of the playing surface frozen and following an inspection he has taken the decision to call off the fixture due to concerns over player safety.

An announcement regarding a rearranged date will be confirmed in due course.

Officials at Sheffield United are extremely disappointed the fixture could not go ahead.

In the build up to the game, our pre-match procedures for forecasted low temperatures were followed, which included the use of our undersoil heating system.

This morning a small section of the playing surface was raised as a cause for concern. With this area still part frozen, all attempts were made to address this section of the pitch for it to meet the standard required for the match to go ahead.

The referee was then called in at the earliest possible opportunity to assess the playing surface. After he arranged an inspection, he deemed there to be a player safety concern, and opted to call off the fixture at 10am.
It would have helped if they'd announced they were having a piotch inspection around 10. Travelled 90 minutes then turned around at Workop. Not as if the weather was a surprise. Roughly the same as yesterday. Did the two managers want to play?

Might help us a little bit especially with this due to have been the last game of the festive period. Can get the players fully recovered and the replay is likely to be either mid week which involves Oxford travelling or potentially a FA Cup weekend. Although I would have liked to have got it done if we would have lost/picked up a vital injury it wouldn’t have been good

Felt very sorry for a couple of elderly Oxford fans in spoons .
They'd been up very early and made it to spoons by 10am for thier 1st trip to Bramall Lane and felt they'd missed out on the experience.

In sympathy they were kidney punched and sent on thier way.

🙃

Seriously though what a farce .. as usual supporters are the victims , if we'd travelled to Oxford for the game to be called off we'd be fuming . Hope the OUFC supporters are given free travel for the rearranged fixture .

The idea of the later kick off is doubtful. If anything it would be an area not affected by sunlight and with sunset not even 90 minutes after 3pm if the pitch isn’t ready at midday it won’t be then. I remember the FA cup game away at Leyton Orient that got called off due to a frozen pitch that was on a Saturday, they replayed it on a Tuesday although tickets were still valid there wasn’t travel comp

You only get visible frost on the surface when there is moisture in the air, the air is very dry at the moment so any moisture in the soil can freeze bone hard without any ice crystals ( frost) being visible
Absolutely right -4% last night but no frost on the car but the chicken run frozen solid not to worry we were there for 09.30 I think it was about 10.15 when we were told called off anyway its a lovely day

As there was only 3 12 o'clock kick offs and rest at 3 why couldn't they have delayed it. I'm sure sky could have put something else on
Probably meant sky missing out on broadcasting the game which would likely be contrary to the agreement with them I’m guessing.

Main issue is asking staff (stewards, pie sellers etc) to work an extra 3 hours. Also likely to mean a significant number of fans can’t make it with the kick off being moved at such short notice.

Then you’ve police, road closures etc to factor in. Probably not a massive effort given opposition and fact it’s a Sunday but police will no doubt prefer a handful of sober Oxford fans on a Tuesday as opposed to a thousand plus who’ve been in the boozer for an extra 3 hours.

I thought the lamps used for grass growth are also used to clear frost? If it was was problem area, why weren’t the lamps used?

But I could be wrong and the heat from them is small 🤷‍♂️

It’s the other side of the ground that was the issue

The three Sheffield leagues have no fixtures scheduled for today. Appreciate Rotherham Sunday League does and it does have some Sheffield clubs in it but virtually all those games have been confirmed as postponed.
They are playing on concord park not Bramall Lane fuming

Aside from the conspiracy theories and "tinpot" accusations there is actually a very simple explanation, its just not as much fun .

Having spent most of my life in subsurface heating and cooling systems, these systems are made up of a series of loops of pipework .it absolutely not unusual for some loops covering one of the areas to fail , many who have UFH will have experienced this .

Simple mechanical failure in circulation , actuation or a simple air lock can cause this and it cant be anticipated, it just happens .

Mechanical devices fail , at the most inopportune times , and thats probably as simple as it is .

Its not quite as much fun as conspiracy or lack of funds or anything but its the most likely explanation.

It's odd really that, in this day and age, the decision is down to one person, namely the one highly trained in interpreting the rules of the game, in the face of professional sportsman, equally well trained in caniving/housery.

On a day like today, they are suddenly expected to switch hats and become a health and safety/meteorological expert, capable of determining whether, at 10am, a pitch will be playable two hours later.

Years ago, I can remember turning up for a Sunday League away game in Mansfield. It was a huge park, with, if I recall, 11 games scheduled for that morning. 3 refs deemed the surface playable, the other 8 called their games off.

My point being, maybe it's time for the decision
to be taken away from the ref at Championship level.

Due to a frozen pitch.

What the fuck have we been doing with our undersoil heating all night? How incredibly tinpot and pathetic 😂

Penny pinching United at it again.

Least we won't have to endure the cold!
Same old posters going in on the club they supposedly support at every opportunity. What inside knowledge do you have that justifies calling the club tinpot?

Could be any number of causes including a fussy ref!

Not impressed at all.

I remember a game against Forest a few years ago when it was blowing a gale, snow all over and the pitch got cleared and had red lines painted on it and we cracked on. Today was nothing like that yet we can't get it sorted.

I'd got as far as Panenka with my 5 year old until some people on their way back told me that it was off. I had thought it was a bit quiet and I'd got parked a bit easier than I expected to but started seeing more people in our colours so thought nothing of it.

Now at Centertainment waiting for Spongbob to start!
