I thought I'd head back in time to the appointment of Adkins to see if the same level of optimism was in the air. I'd forgotten about Reading fans who weren't exactly complimentary though.

My personal favourite is this quote "“Nigel Adkins will be getting the Sheff U job. Sliding down the divisions isn’t he, Brendan Rodgers will be next one on that downward spiral.”

I wonder if the guy who wrote that has just blanked it from his mind, can laugh at how wrong he called it or perhaps still thinks he's right and is waiting for Rodgers to finally show his true colours

I've got my wish and couldn't be happier with this appointment, the comments on here are all positive, so it's just left to SJ and his team to do the business, cannot wait to see who's in and out, player wise.
Have we the cash?
What's this thing with Atkins, the mans a screwball, all be a fairly successful con man.
Thank you so much Roy, UTB, onwards and upwards.

I went back to read this as I too thought it was total praise and had forgotten about the Reading fans

Looks like I'll be sitting next to a bunch of fucking cockneys next season. Jellied eels and Hendo's anyone?

Well, they all seem more certain we're going straight back up than we do!

That's nothing new on here. In fact it won't be long before we are nailed on to swap places with them. Give it a few months!

Where have I heard this before...
"And I bet they let him get on with it too; no interruption or interference from a chairman’s clueless offspring."

“The bad periods you describe are because he uses the first 10 games or so, to create the ‘identity’. He did the same at the beginning of each season with us. It’s a trait, I expect it to be the same at Sheff Utd.”

I remember when they beat us 5-4 at the Lane it was around late November time and they were still mid to bottom half of the table. I'd not been following what they'd done but the guy who sits next to me said before the game - don't be fooled by their position this lot are pretty good. It was around January before they got into the top 6, but they finished 3rd on 88 points (which would have been enough for the autos the season after).

Bit of patience might be advised if we have a slow start.

Very encouraging comments about him & his style of football , let’s hope the board back him fully ⚔️

“At both Watford and Fulham there’s seems to have been issues with him and even kmac said he can be “intimidating”.

I took this as a positive. Didzy was saying they want someone who isn't a Mr Nice Guy. Looks like they have him.
I’ve often thought that one of Adkins’s problems was that he had a very different personality to Clough. Clough seemed quite dictatorial, blunt and to the point and I suspect he set out very clearly what he expected from the players, what the game plan was, where they should be positioned etc. I think every player knew exactly what his role was and if they didn’t play like he told them to, they got dropped, like Collins.
I suspect Adkins was a bit more “play it how you see it” and a bit too easy going for some of our players. You could see how the ex-Derby players responded much better to Wilder than they did Adkins, because he was blunt too, didn’t put up with crap and probably gave them very clear roles and instructions.

It looks like Slav is much more of a Wilder or a Clough than an Adkins so it’s reasonable to think the players will take to him. Likewise the supporters - we don’t need someone from Sheffield, just someone who sees things like a Sheffielder, like Bassett. He was a west Londoner but he was straight to the point, didn’t fanny around and got things done with the minimum of fuss and a little bit of humour. Hopefully Slav will be similar and connect with us.

Very encouraged reading the views, it looks like we may be on another journey. Anyway cheers weirdo, have a well earned rest until next signing

Great to hear decent views, particularly from Watford fans. I've just watched the Sheff Utd Way also and the interviews they did with a respective Fulham and Watford fan, both were positive but one or both, can't remember, said there was no plan B, which may sound familiar. I'm over the moon personally, I think as a personality he'll command instant respect from the players. One of the comments from a Watford fan on Roy's reviews saying that Slav van be imitating, I would imagine after Wilder who as we all know was far from Mr Nice Guy, that Slav will be no more intimidating. It's not as if we've just had Adkins as manager is it!

As for the lack of Plan B, that's something that many bosses will be accused of but I think his time in the Prem was very short and it's difficult to judge that he had no plan B when he was there for such a short spell. I think in his last game at Fulham they only lost 1 - 0 away at Liverpool and perhaps we was adjusting then, we'll never know. I don't think it'll be Kevin Keegan football 5 - 4 stuff as much some would have us believe, he's known more than anything for possession based football, something that our fans will have to be patient with, although Wilder's football in the Champ and first Prem season was very much possession based. I hope Slav does use wingers, or an attacking mid in the Duffy role, we desperately need creativity. Seems one of the key observations on Slav's football us a high defensive line, defenders on the half way line. I remember Bassett used to play that also from memory, certainly a high defensive line, I used to find it nerve wracking at times, but our defence will be well equipped with Egan and Bash playing, not many, if any better than them at Champ level, and good enough for the Prem still.

Booker4 I’m not sure Egan will be with us next season 😒
Maybe, but he's 29 I think this year, he may have interest, but if he does then we'll get a decent fee. I don't want him to go, but centre halves are easier to replace then goal scorers, sorry Egan! But Egan is a leader and a legend, I really hope he stays, I could see Wilder coming in for him if he goes to Celtic maybe. I wonder if Eddie Howe will end up in the Championship somewhere, now he's turned down Celtic.

As a few have mentioned, he seems to need about 10 games into the season to get into the groove, so I think we need to hold back on the excitement otherwise its going to be shoes off in the car park

Cheers Roy!
Not sure about us being instant favourites for promotion, but it seems like we might have the right man?
