Cheating goes on all the time in football in various guises. Granted, not often to this extent. I just think that a lot of people find it all too easy to blame the West Ham thing for our own failings I.E. not managing to scrape a draw against a poor Wigan side at home, winning just three away games in a season, scoring 8 goals away from home in a whole season etc.
Yes, West Ham shouldn't have cheated, but as a club we seem to focus a lot of our energy on the things we can do nothing about but not address the things that we can actually change.
We should not have needed to get any points at all from that game against Wigan as West Ham should already have been relegated. The fact that they had the services of a world class player, when they should not have done, put them at an unfair advantage. They gained points they would not otherwise have got and I feel the only fair outcome would have been to deduct all points that they gained in any match in which he (or Mascherano) played.
Noone argues that Ben Johnson should have been allowed to retain his 1988 Olympic 100 metres gold medal. And what did he do? He broke the rules by using a performance enhancing substance that he was not allowed to use. In many ways, West Ham did the same thing. They boosted the performance of their side by using the services of a player they were not allowed to use.
Yes we won only 3 away games all season. But in that same season Middlesborough, Fulham, Watford and Charlton won fewer away games, and Portsmouth won the same number as us. Last season WBA, Middlesborough, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Stoke and Manchester City all won fewer than 3 away games.
I won't even go into all the bad decisions that were made against us throughout the season (including the foul on Jagielka immediately before he gave the penalty away against Wigan), which contrary to popular belief did not even themselves out over the course of the season. But the way the premier league dealt with the West Ham saga was the final straw.
I don't want any kind of appeal, legal action etc over the world cup bid, but think we were absolutely right pursue our grievance with the West Ham saga.
