Hamer’s free kick goal was the last free kick goal we scored since Norwood scored in the top left corner (can’t remember which team) but I think it was around 2 years ago. Pretty mad how we’ve only scored 2 direct free kicks in the past 2 years. Correct me if i’m wrong though.

Also i’m surprised Hamer took it over Burrows as it was more favourable for a left footer in my opinion to bend it top right corner.

Hopefully we can score more free kicks this season, UTB ⚔️

Norwoods was against Blackburn, was a peach.

Anyone remember that one where we bumped into each other to make it look like a mistake and then scored from it?

Did we ever actually score one of these? Michael Brown had one really well saved against Leeds in the FA Cup QF in 2003 and I think Beattie might have hit the post against Boro in Blackwell's first game back, but can't remember one ever actually going in. Great routine though, used to love that!

I’m certain we did but I can’t remember who scored. Going back at least 15-20 years I’m sure

Tommy Doyle was the last to score direct from a free kick at Sunderland in March 2023

Off top of your head, do you recall exactly how many free kicks Borbokis scored in the 97/98 season? I thinking four (but am probably wrong).

v Norwich (h) in April 1998 and v Sunderland (h) in the play offs semi final May 1998. Not sure about Wrexham (a) in League Cup in August 1997. His two other goals (v Sunderland h and Walsall a) were from open play. The following season he scored direct from a free kick twice. v Swindon (h) and v Notts County (a)

Beattie scored 2 free kicks in a week the first against Wednesday in the 2-2 at BDTBL and then he scored again vs Burnley away in a 2-1 win 8th & 12 April 2008 both similar distance 25 yards smashed it

Goals from direct free kicks are are rarity in all football. Last season in the PL less the 4 % of attempts from free kicks were scored.
On that basis might be a while before we see another .

When you look at the stats it's not actually that mad, last season in the Premier League there were 11 goals scored from direct free kicks, the success rate from direct free kick shots was around 4% - so you could argue that it's mad that teams actually still try shooting directly when the success rate is so low...

Edit - The Fox said the same thing while I was googling to check the exact number of goals 🤓

As mentioned on the other thread We scored a direct free away at Millwall when Doyle shot and George Long let it in.

I’m guessing the alternative to a direct free kick would be a cross into the box, I wonder what the success rate is for that?

Was there for both of them.

I’d swear the one against Burnley was more than 25 yards out though. Seemed a lot further although I know we were at the opposite end of the ground

Yeah, wasn’t that a James Beattie free kick. Devised and choreographed by that football genius Kevin (couldn’t play Sharp) Blackwell.

Tony McMahon
Tony McMahon
(twice in one match)

Freekicks were his only redeeming feature. He spent too much time winding the opposition up:

McMahon scored another against Oxford in the FA cup about 2 weeks later. I think they were his only goals in his United career.
Be careful, if you say his name 3 times he might end up back at the club in some capacity stinking the place out again.
He's right up there for me as one of my most despised United players.

So was I, with both of them stood over it I thought the options were a Hamer cross or a Burrows shot. Clever really cus the keeper was probably thinking the same, sneaking it round the near side of the wall made it basically impossible for him to get to it.
