I sell old football magazines at my site www.soccerbilia.com .Last month I bought a copy of the March 28th 1925 Sports Budget. In it there was an article by “Fred Tunstall, Sheffield United’s International outside left” entitled “Why Semi-finals are the hardest games in football”.
His article starts:
“The Cup Final! There’s magic in the words. They bring up a picture of trainloads of madly cheering fans going “oop for the Coop”. They mean medals win or lose, for the players, and the handsome silver trophy for the winners. There’s something substantial in being a member of a finalist team-a feeling of something done; all the better if one goes on to win the cup, but to have gone so far as Wembley is honour enough.
But the semi-finals. There’s no solid satisfaction about them. It’s well enough to have got there: the officials are pleased and the supporters are pleased. But we players know that it’s up to us to reach the final”.
He finishes:
“All the same I’d rather lose a Final than a “Semi”.”
Sheffield United 5–0 Corinthian 10 January 1925.
Sheffield United 3–2 Sheffield Wednesday 31 January 1925.
Sheffield United 1–0 Everton 21 February 1925.
Sheffield United 2–0 West Bromwich Albion 7 March 1925.
Sheffield United 2–0 Southampton Stamford Bridge, London 28 March 1925.
Sheffield United 1 – 0 Cardiff City Tunstall Goal 30'
Wembley, London, 25 April 1925, Attendance: 91,763.
