Given Clough clearly prefers 4-4-2, Baxter deserves his chance to go up top. He's certainly got that bit of quality we need up there, maybe in a False Nine role :D

Is 12 goals from 48 starts an irrelevant stat when it comes to judging him?

No, you're quite right Bergs, it's probably the most relevant one, it just doesn't fit with alco's opinion, and is therefore open to ridicule.

Oops, just seen alco's reply, note to self, always read to end of thread before jumping in.....

In any case There's a notable difference in the ratio when he's been sub and when he's started. Not sure why that is? Not exactly been comeback-kings, have we, the last few seasons? Never Usually Say Die? Has he come on primarily to waste time or defend set pieces? Does he need to be part of a pre-planned tactic, where the team are intent on giving him the type of service he needs, to convert?

Danny Wilson certainly had a penchant for bringing on a sub for a few minutes of injury time.
I'm not sure how many of Porter's subs "appearances" that accounts for but it's hardly fair classing them in the same bracket as a starting appearance.
I would suggest that the average sub appearance is around 20 minutes, so 1/4 of a game.
With 30 subs appearances that makes it 12 goals from about 55 appearances.

Sothall_Blade you got me wondering and as I had a spare 15 minutes, I've trawled Soccerbase for some figures.

  • Chris Porter has made 78 appearances for United with 48 starts (average 78 mins) and 30 substitute appearances (average 18 mins).

  • He has 13* goals in those 78 United appearances. 12 of those goals were scored when he started the game.

  • Nine goals were scored in the league, three have come in the FA Cup and one in the FL Trophy.

  • He's never scored more than one goal in a game for United (that's poor for a striker)

  • He averages a goal every 312 minutes when starting League games (or 0.28 goals per game, 13 in a 46 game season) but only has 1 goal in 547 substitute minutes (0.16 goals/game, 7 in a 46 game season).

  • We've won more games when he's come off the bench with a win ratio of 52% against 41% - but those figures are skewed by the 2011-12 season when he made a lot of sub-10 minute cameos.

The upshot is that if you want Porter to score, he needs to start.

*I think a lot of sites exclude FL trophy goals. Porter scored at Don Valley when we beat Rotherham 2-1 in 2011.

*** His main rivals for a starting place are King, Taylor, Baxter and Ironside.
How are their "goals per minute" stats looking for United by comparison?

Porter is to the striker role what Marcus Williams is defending. Neither of which should be anywhere near the starting eleven.

I'd agree if we'd got anybody better in that position in a 4-4-2 which is what NC favours (thankfully) Anybody know his stats when he's played in that set up rather than playing as a lone striker with an ineffective midfield and manager?

Porter is fine as a squad player, can be effective from the bench, okay to start the odd game, a return of 12 goals from 48 starts is more than adequate for a target man, seems to have a good understanding with Miller. He's always going to look a better player with a quick striker alongside him rather than say an Ironside, Kitson or King.

Porter has only scored 8 league goals for us.

How much more overwhelming evidence do some of you need to realise that No Goals Joe is not remotely good enough?

Should we send him out on a 10 year loan to assist his development?

Leon Clarke in January?

No Goals Joe is not remotely good enough?

A player is not Officially Shit until Pinchy has given him a witty and clever nickname. "No Goals Joe", who scored our last goal in cup football - a penalty - is now Officially Shit.

Pinchy is also available for comedy scriptwriting now that the Chuckle Brothers are in semi-retirement and no longer in need of his considerable talents. "To me, to you" indeed.

I think that "Pretty Poor Predictions pinchy" was referring to "No Goals Joe Ironside" not "Can't kick Chris Porter"
