Foreign Players

As long as they're foreigners with British names I've no objections. And before any screams racaim it's nothing to do with that whatsoever. It's our fans spelling abilities. Most can't even spell our captains name reyt.
Simple, just call them Johnny foreigners

I always prefer the players to be as relatable as possible, so would prefer a team full of Sheffield United fans. I'm sure that's possible if you scour the leagues, but probably not likely that they'll all want to sign for us. Failing that, they should all be English, down to earth lads who are happy to go on London Road and get smashed in a hovel of a pub every time we get promoted.

The sad thing is that the Wilder years were as close to that as we'll ever get.

Mamadou Seck - the only shit Senegalese player of a generation and we managed to sign him. Strong rumours at the time that Warnock's mattress became a lot harder after he signed.

Foreign XI

GK - Wilko De Vogt (NED).

I think we've only had 3 foreign keepers make 1st team appearances, the others being Frank Talia (AUS) infamous Lee Baxter (who was half Swedish). De Vogt. Talia and De Vogt both made 6 appearances and were equally unmemorable. De Vogt played in the Battle of Bramall Lane so can have a starting berth by virtue of that.

RWB - Vas Borbokis (GRE)

Easy choice. One of the few successful foreign signings we've made Absolutely made for the right wing back position. Struggled defensively in a 4-4-2. Only other foreign right backs I can think of is Lescinel Jean François (HAT) and David Sommeil (GUA).

LWB - Roger Nilsen (NOR)

Possibly the only foreign left back we've ever had.

CBS

Michael Vonk (NED), Shaun Murphy (AUS), Claude Davis (JAM)

Slim pickings in this department. Murphy probably the most fondly remembered. "Cut throat" Davis gets in by virtue of playing in the Premier League although made some horrendous errors.

The only others I could think of are Doug Hodgson (AUS) who was mainly a reserve (albeit a colourful character), Jonas Wirmola (SWE)(played a handful of games) and Davy Gysbrechts (BEL) (largely a sub in the Adrian Heath era). Tri Dellas (GRE) may have been a shout but was mainly used as a CM.

CM

Sander Berge (NOR), Alex Sabella (ARG), Colin Kazim Richards (TUR)

Again not much competition in this department. I'm too young to have seen Sabella but is arguably our greatest ever foreign player. Kazim Richards played in the Prem weighing in with a few goals. Berge hasn't put in many great performances but when he has he's looked head and shoulders above anything we've seen in my lifetime.

CF

Jan Aage Fjortoft (NOR), Lys Mousset (FRA)

Fjortoft is self explanatory. Whilst most fans would now be happy to see Mousset moved on he was virtually unplayable at times last season and was a key part of the side finishing 9th in the first season back in the Premier League.

SUBS

Talia (AUS), Dellas (GRE), Santos (SUR), Marcelo (BRA/POR), Peschisolido (CAN)

Who was the centre back, think he may have been Argentinian, Parma or someone

never forget len de goey
Harry haslam Sheffield United signed him for £100k from Sparta Rotterdam yet their accounts indicated he left on a free as his contract had expired. No doubt large agents fees in those days as well
Pre Bosman (1995) you could still demand a fee for out of contract players couldnt you?

Last time we were getting really excited about a foreign signing was Florent Cuvelier bought from Walsall.
He was supposed to be the next big thing.....a reight player.

However after leaving us he returned to Walsall...struggled badly....then went to Morecombe but he wasn’t good enough to play a game for them.
He’s still only 28 but is out of contract and can’t find a club.

This chap played in goal 10 times for us in 87/88. How little did we know... (apologies for the memories this might bring back)

We have to look at overseas players to maje us competitive next season. Anel was a great buy and I have to believe his success will not go unnoticed to those that are looking at a Premier League club. There has to be some talent that we can get for a bargain who would love to try they skills with us. Two or three would do to give us a fighting chance next season. Who? No idea, but our crack recruiting team are on it and with no Wilder to block their suggestions. (Not sure if he did or didn't,)
