In the past you'd get away with a kickin from the coppers or a £100 fine from the queen.

Now,your face in "the star"

That's a badge of honour for some....
I got a £110 fine in 1977 for fighting at Bolton, didn't see the game, didn't get out of the cell till midnight ,the local plod went to my Parents house, all the neighbours rubber necking,my poor old Ma was so ashamed, the old fella was going mad "Keep the bastard,I'll fuckin kill him when he gets home"
A short ,sharp shock for me,financially and the shame I'd brought on my Ma, made me think twice....

:D:D...My old man locked up,so,being smart,I climbed the drainpipe to the bedroom window...
The big fucker was waiting in the dark, and dragged me in,shook me about and threw me to the floor.
The worst part was hearing my mother sobbing..

While it may not seem to big or clever now , and I can fully understand everybody's reason for thinking it .
I include myself in that now and I stopped all that aggro business mid to late 80's ,
when kids , mortgage and having to work fucking hard in Ireland to survive came on the seen .
But growing up in the 70's watching every team come to Sheffield and basically take the piss out of us ( Sheffield ) was fucking annoying
I have no regret for standing up for , my mates , my club , and my city ,
Because it's a long time since Leeds marched up Fargate and didn't get a fucking pasting , I was being taken to the pictures by my mother at the time and saw them marching to the Lane , through Sheffield .
I'm not the biggest , baddest , hardest fucker you'll ever meet ,
and when me and the lads from Norfolk comp who got together to go to the lane , stuck together ,
went away together , the first to sit in the south stand before anyone else together .
Going away in mini vans while still at school , together .
I tell you what it's not big or clever ( all these 50 year olds bouncing around ) come on lads grow up ,
But nobody comes to Sheffield ( United ) anymore mob handed expecting to own the place .
It was an important point of our history in the 80' till the 90's ,
I'm proud of that time , and the mates I made then , ( some who have passed away ) , some who I go to the games to now with .
At that time it was the only thing to do , fuckall work , fuckall prospects , fuckall future .
As I've said a time and a place , that was the time and that was the place .

Well said Dublin, what year were you in Norfolk Comp? I left there in 78, lived on the Arbourthorne, Gary Robertson, known at school as "Robbo".

I think it was a year after you left mate . Mr Bull was my year head .( I could be wrong memories not what it was )
You'll probably know some of the boys I knocked around with , ( still do before when over for the games ) .
Lived on Norfolk Park , probably saw my name sprayed around town , and Norfolk park school .
Beeffy + punk , Beeffy + Skids ,
another favourite of mine was a parrot with a arrow through its head saying Blades kill Fowls .

I went to that game, missed all the trouble and ended up in a pub nearby that had a lock-in until three. The only violence I saw that day was two old drunks taking huge (and inaccurate) swings at each other about 2.15.

Sounds like you had the right idea. :)

As someone who's only been going to the lane for the last twenty years I haven't really encountered much violence at Blades games, aside from the very occasional brawl breaking out between relatively few fans. I've heard stories, and vaguely know about the 'BBC' etc. But it's quite hard to imagine.

Question to the fans that have been going since the 70s/80s and beyond: Have you noticed a big difference in hooliganism and violence at United games in modern times? If so, what's changed and why?
well I was around very young in the early to late 70's

well i was around in the early 70's - very young and still around at the end of the 70's not quite so young by then - there was a constant threat/undercurrent of violence/aggro - didn't like it at the time - was never what you might call a hard man but feel weirdly nostalgic about it all now - there was no chance of a prawn sandwich in those days but fist sandwiches were widely

available! - not got the hang of this yet

We were in same year maybe Same class how well did you know Trevor Ashton
VOB, same year different class, not my biggest mate but still a pal because of United, on more than one occasion I woukd walk over to meet him a a few of his mates and walk to the ground with a banner, not that often usually a big game, certainly did it against Wendy. Was he a mate of yours?

I have a memory of a Millwall fan being stabbed to death on a train by a blade, probably '90s. Did that happen or is my memory playing tricks?

Fuzzy memory but I recall a blade battering "Leicester or forest " fan no doubt someone will have a clearer memory :tumbleweed:
