I seem to remember a derby match at The Lane in the late sixties when acid was said to have been thrown at the pigs by The Blades fans.
The Star made a big thing of it at the time but I don't think anyone was badly hurt.
Yup I was there, said to my older brother " canyou smell vinegar"? during the game, my memory says it was hodgies testimonial, at school on the following day everyone wastalking about it, that night watching calendar news and they had two lads on, one Wendy the other a blade, one of my mates from school! Trevor Ashton was his name, interviewer asked Wendy about any trouble, said there weren't mutch, interviewer asked trev he goes into fine detail of how they tried to come on the kop mob handed and we charged and scattered em, he fookin loved it, he wasn't lying either, hero worship at school, I bet he still talks about it to his grandkids, probably ( slightly) exagerated though.

Thornton, are you having a fantasy half-hour? Don't you have enough work to occupy yourself with? What's all this mockney, Stone Island nonsense? If it keep the little ones happy and keeps them off of street corners then all the better for the rest of us.......now then, I thought you were a captain of industry or summat like that?

Off with eye problems - hospital visit yesterday. Getting olders a bitch. Can't drive until Friday after picking up new lenses and glasses.

Anyhow, I like to be down with the Middle aged who think they're kids. Ralph for me though...... :) none of this Stone Island nonsense.

I was there on the kop, I think it was a county cup match.

Sorry to learn about the eye problems, hope it's not long-term.

The ageing process is certainly a mofo, these days I just about have music to keep me in a state of perpetual youth......but it goes with the territory I'm afraid, none of us can escape it. I think the best we can do is surround ourselves with creature comforts and come on here to bitch.

mid to late 1960's onwards, crowd trouble and aggro was the norm. Late 1960's can remember loads of opposition fans on the kop, it wasn't deemed the complete affront as it would be now. There was usually a ritual playing out if the opposition fans were in sufficient numbers and made a move to occupy "our" space. It was very heavy violence at times and just got worse as it moved into the 1970's at which point away fans coming onto the kop would automatically be attacked.
Most dramatic would be Man Utd and Leeds ( numbers), West Ham and Newcastle ( nutjacks/loony toons). Remeber L'pool on the kop in numbers 1970's
This subject must have been "done to death" now surely ?

Not sure if this is a Blades urban myth but wasn't there an incident in the 80's when a Millwall fan got killed at a game with the Blades. The story goes that later Millwall were playing a game up north, might have been Leeds or Huddersfield and a load of them decided to come to Sheffield to gain some revenge. Apparently they rocked up at The George pub in Woodhouse, but word got round and a load of Woodhouse lads came out and gave them all a good beating.

It wasnt at a game, it was 1986
They came to Sheffield after a game, there was some trouble with Blades outside the Mulberry it spilled down Commercial Street, Millwall fan fell smacked his head on the kerb

It was The Royal not The George

The Millwall incident was definitely the Mullberry Tavern near the Crucible Theatre.

I seem to remember lots of fun when Newcastle were in town, not just at the game either!!
T'ole in the road was a fun place to be I tell thee!!

I don't believe it is a myth but actually happened. I think they came out of the Mulberry Tavern which used to be opposite the Claymore which was on Arundel Gate ( I think). Don't know if it was football related or just violence in a city centre

Just read the responses above mine. It was definitely the Mulberry Tavern. Don't know if anyone was charged or even convicted

As someone who's only been going to the lane for the last twenty years I haven't really encountered much violence at Blades games, aside from the very occasional brawl breaking out between relatively few fans. I've heard stories, and vaguely know about the 'BBC' etc. But it's quite hard to imagine.

Question to the fans that have been going since the 70s/80s and beyond: Have you noticed a big difference in hooliganism and violence at United games in modern times? If so, what's changed and why?

I think it all changed after the sty disaster. You can get away with a lot now that in the seventies you wouldn't even dream about. I remember seeing Blades wearing United shirts on White Hart Lane in the 90's which only a village idiot would have done just a few years before. You would have got a right slap for taking such a liberty.
If you ever went to Chelsea on the train, the tube from Earls Court would have been full of skin heads, you just kept quiet and hoped no one clocked you. These days you can wear your colours and no one bothers you. Those who want to fight sort it out between themselves and do it away from the police whereas in the 60s and 70s it was a free for all.

Thought the Millwall supporter got knocked down by an oncoming vehicle on Arundel Gate near the 02 Academy building... wasn't it The Roxy at the time?

It was reported at the time that the Millwall fan was running slipped and cracked his head on the kerb on Commercial Street

I could be wrong but I always thought the mulberry clash was well before the wood house incident?.

The Woodhouse incident as far as I know happened the following season

I was outside The Claymore when it happened had a few glasses chucked at me for my sins
The trouble carried on and spilled over onto Commercial Street

Indeed it had changed by then, as i remember it being the 'Tottingham terrors' who were getting a slap for their troubles by United's hoolie goolies in the early 90s down Sevenue Sisters Road. Think the match in Sept 90 sticks out (think a Gazza inspired Spuds beat us 4 nil) where the home fans got a bit of a ragging. Utd certainly had more than their fair share of 'game lads' in those days.

Going away to matches the 70s and 80s was always potential day of trouble even if you didnt directly look for it. I know me and my mates never went away looking for trouble (we just wanted a fun day out and to have a good gargle on the ale) but we were never at the back of the door to get stuck in if events transpired that way. People get older (and hopefully wiser), interests change, and people have families.

Football has changed in many ways not least having a bunch of pansies falling on the floor looking like they've been shot if they get touched (whats all that about!!) but trouble wise it has got a lot better.
