First ever AWAY game with your mates?

Yep - he did cross the divide and was very well accepted with his wholehearted displays.

The Utter Cunt thought he could do the same - I cringe at the thought of that TWAT in red and white.
AAARRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!

Cheer up mate lol, he wasn't the first and probably won't be the last who takes the short walk between stadiums.

On the bright side, our future looks better than theirs. In the scale of things we have a top manager who knows what he's doing, has the fans behind him, and seems to care about those things that matter. Think it all goes to prove that there's such a thing as good family values, and his dad would've been proud of his son.

Jeff King got to the byline and crossed it for Edwards to head into the net.
Was stood right behind the goal that day - we all went mental

Yep - we were sat on the side on wooden benches and King took it off Morris right in front of us to mass groans but then put in a fantastic cross for Edwards to knock home - cue pandemonium and I *might* have gone through the bench

Not sure you grasped who I was talking about there IIYB - it wasn't Kingy - I liked him

1971 at Old Trafford...thousands locked outside, separated from mi mates I ended up on The Stretford End. We were top of the league on a magnificent run, Ted Hemsley went off injured and then George Best scored THAT goal. (Don't get me started!) We eventually lost 2-0. Grrrr!

We were 14 or 15 and went by SUT.

First 'trip' to an away game was Man U, couldn't get in.
Size of the crowds was scary to us, went on the train, parents no idea we'd gone.
On our way back home before kick off and only found out score on MOTD.

First 'game' was Derby in the November by club coach.

March 21st 1970. Lost 2-1 at Leicester. Len Glover opened the scoring, Gil Reece equalised just before half time. Rodney Fern got the winner. After the match Woody made all the players in the team coach sign my programme. Top man! Wish I still had the programme

Should have read the thread title properly before posting! At the age of 13 I was supposed to watch the Blades play at West Ham in Sept 1975 with my Norwich supporting schoolmate travelling by train from Newbury (we lied to the school in our exeat form stating that we would be in Newbury all day). When we arrived in London my mate was saying we would be back at school well after bedtime if we went to West Ham which is at the other side of London so we decided to watch Arsenal v Everton. Everton were winning 2-1 with 15 mins left so we decided to leave the ground to catch the train back to Newbury for Paddington (we missed Frank Stapleton's equaliser). The school were worried that we werent back at school at tea time and the Housemaster drove around Newbury to look for us before eventually finding us walking back from Newbury town centre. Our excuse for being late was that my mate was feeling too ill to walk back to school (he was in the sick bay in the previous day!) I think the Housemaster didnt really fall for the story and we were grounded for a week! In November 1978 me (I was in the 6th form then) and my Saints supporting mate went by train from Newbury to see Spurs beat Wolves by 1-0. Two weeks later I travelled by train from Newbury to watch the Blades lose 3-1 at Charlton so I suppose that this was my first Blades away match without my dad or any adult

85 ish at Elland Road. The locals were playing their lovely game of throwing stuff at the opposition fans. On the coach there, in the ground and on the way back, we had all sorts of items launched at us. I was 15, and it was both scary and strangely exhilarating.

That was of my first away games also..I was about 14...remember a copper with a massive head on the train and the debris reigning down on us...a small group from our school started going to local-ish away games that season..Udder's etc

You'd have been a year or so younger than me. I remember getting a large police escort back to the coaches, and as we went through an underpass one of the coppers horses started trotting, and cracking the copper's head on the ceiling of the underpass every time he bounced up in the saddle. :D

First one with the lads was Mansfield in about 77/78 ,drew 1-1 ,punch ups all over before during and after . Didn't miss a game for about 10 years after that :)

For me it was the sty - promotion year 1971 - stood on the open kop, 55,000 from memory and I can still see the penalty that we never got....was it Gil Reece that was dropped in the area - the ref bottled it.

UTB

Had been to a few away games with the folks, but first one without parental control:
1) Darlington '82
2) Not telling!
3) Car
It was quite a good day out :)

that would have been my first away game but my dad was alarmed at the amount of pushing and shoving going on at the turnstlies so we left. Went to Maine Road instead to watch Man City reserves (the team my dad supported incidentally) beat Bury reserves 3-1 in front of a slightly smaller crowd.
First real away game was against Leeds, lost 1-0 Alan Clarke scored c1972. Did get revenge on them some years later when King Keith was the only scorer - how sweet

Norwich 4-2 United, United led 2-0 and it was Montgomery's debut.

Official travel. Was about 18/19.

Chester away September 78, travelled on one of two corporation double deckers (unofficial supporters of course), despite setting off an hour before the official coaches we still arrived in chester 20 mins after kick-off this became a familiar story in seasons to come, the on board toilet was a beer keg sat on the wide step halfway down the stairs, the hole in the top of those things takes some hitting after half a dozen long lifes on a moving bus:), was 14 at the time, first defeat (I think), of many that season , we lost 2-1, as was the norm in those days, half the bus tried and managed to get into their end (not me btw:))

March 1968. Leeds United FA Cup 6th round. Me and two mates all aged 12 booked seats on a Law Bros. coach and made our way up there. After beating West Ham away in the 5th round we really felt that this was our year. We lost 0-1. Then got relegated.

I think the attendance was about 48,000. Thought about this match in recent times. If my daughter told me at the age of 12 she was going to Leeds Music festival with two of her mates I would have told her in no uncertain terms that she wasn't.
I can't even remember mentioning to my parents where I was going. Different times.

4/9/71 a 2-3 victory at Notts Forest I think, as my 1st real away game with only mates for company, the sty and millmoor etc don't count as proper away trips as far as I'm concerned. We did quite a few away trips with my mates dad in his old Morris 1100 with a great big hole rusted in the back floor at one side making it a three seater really.

Remember this one. What a great start to the season. Something sticks in my mind that Ted Hemsley made a mistake for one of their goals and Trevor Hockey ran over to give him a motivating pep talk. What a leader Hockey was.

I think mine was Coventry in 1967. I was 17 and couldn't go to away games as I had been chasing eggs for my school team since age 11. We must have had this Saturday off. It was Coventry's first ever home match in the top tier of English football, (67-68 season), 26th August - drew 2-2.

They had two very well-known forwards playing for them - Bobby Gould and John Tudor!

I remember that we came from the station in some numbers and some of the Blades rampaged through Woolworths knicking stuff from the open counters.

We eventually gathered a large police presence around us but the day settled down. In the winter of 2004-2005 I spent 7 months baby-sitting my then employer's telemarketing centre which had gone into meltdown due to a very weak manager, and from the office window, I could look down on that very same Woolworths store!

During the match, we Blades and the Cov fans rubbed along nicely together apart from one or two daft spats which we sorted out - no segregation that day and the Cov fans seemed in total awe of being in the First Division.
Almost like children, wide-eyed.

Of course, we all know how that season ended ...

Not counting Wednesday, where I worked on the groundstaff.

Ont'train (special), mid sixties, Fulham or West Ham, probably in t'cup.

We always seemed to play them, or these matches are the ones we went. (too difficult to get to away games because of being required at Hillsborough).

Can't remember when or even the score, weren't bothered. First time out of Sheffield wi'out Mam and Dad.

For the football or the punch ups? I was at that game. We were packed in a corner like sardines and coppers were provoking and arresting like it was a national sport!

Can't honestly remember the year of my first away game with the lads but I know,it was Swillbrough. One of our mates had access to a shareholders badge. If you showed it at the turnstile 2 could get in for free so the first 2 would go in, go to a particular toilet on the edge of the ground, drop the badge out of the window to us outside and 2 more would go in. Went on for years so in those days it was United one week pigs next week.

First away trip was the Pigs away September 1966,went with my father drew 2-2. First with the lads would have been Blackpool 1968/9 ish . Went on the train.. Remember Blackpool had a keeper called Harry Thompson who was a bit of a character and their fans kept singing "Sir Harry Thompson" to which he responded by blowing kisses ostentatiously, A big fat Blade behind me kept shouting "Harry" and the pair of them were blowing kisses to each other (you had to be there). The match day experience has changed for the worst for me as there doesn't seem room for characters or interaction with the crowd as it would be seen as incitement, Currie would never have had the persona that he has now.

As bad as it sounds a bit of both ,the adrenalin was great for a 15 years old off the leash with your mates , and I still go to the games with the same mates 35 years later ,still get that buzz but off a different leash now :)

Was that the early kick off ?

If it was then that was a cracking Blades following on the old side terrace. (if memory serves)

Rufus.
