Today, their 'keeper has made 3, possibly 4, absolutely top class saves. On another day a couple of those go in, and we win the game fairly comfortably. Plus the handful of other openings we engineered but couldn't finish.

That said, our form in the last few months tells its own tale. For all the many intersecting reasons widely rehearsed on here, we have not been able to finish games off or convert (genuine, at times) superiority into goals. Today we played with intensity for a while, then lapsed for a while, then played with intensity, then lapsed again. And today I felt that neither we nor Milwall, for all their well-organisedness, looked like a 'proper' play-off side.

I'm not necessarily an "It's been a great season, so who cares?" kind of person, and I definitely see the argument that says you seize the main chance while it's there, then adapt as best you can to the higher level. And given the ongoing handbags between millionaires in our boardroom, I do worry that the main chance may not come around again next year.

But today, overall, says to me that a finish somewhere 7th-9th is probably a decent reflection of where we're currently at. And in that sense, however disappointing it will be if we do miss out, then missing out will probably, in the end, be more or less fair enough.

Booooo ! Shoes off ! Everyone out ! :)

if burton beat derby and boro draw with bristol it's not over yet.. we'd have to win every game like..

We've thrown it away ourselves which is the annoyance. We aren't going to get in the play offs which is hardly a disaster in our first season but we all know deep down we should be comfortably in the top 6 with how we have played.

I'm deflated tonight because there was another game we deserved to win but didn't. It sounds harsh saying we've wasted a great chance to get promoted when you consider our budget but that's exactly how I feel. I have a horrible feeling that we won't realise just how good of a chance this season was until next season.

It’s been progress that should in normal circumstances be ripe for building on in the summer.

Unfortunately instead of sitting down and plotting how to back the manager in the summer our owners have decided to have a fight.

That's fine OP but today was deja vu, This happens far too often.

Goal difference rarely lies, and even had we won some of the games we were on top in, our goal difference would still be a lot worse than the clubs comfotably in the play off positions

What other day? The same thing happens every week.

I'm worried with the shenanigans behind the scenes and the unlikelihood of Wilder getting the investment he needs that we'll slide down the table next season.

It has been a decent/good season. It reality it has been a good season but it feels odd saying 'good' when we look set to finish between 7-10th

Bottom line is, we have been the best team in a good number of games this season but we've been the ones to throw the points away. Teams haven't improved in these games and deservedly gained a point or three, we've thrown it away. That's what's disappointing.

Wouldn't even call finishing outside the top 6 disappointing far from it how many of us thought we would be where we are at this in the season only 12 months ago was our promotion from league one a year before that was that nightmare under adkins

Agree with the OP.

I think we are very close to being a comfortable top 6 side and only a couple of good quality signings away from that so we can be more clinical. Whether we get those signings remains to be seen......UTB
