Often disappointed, never discouraged
Today, their 'keeper has made 3, possibly 4, absolutely top class saves. On another day a couple of those go in, and we win the game fairly comfortably. Plus the handful of other openings we engineered but couldn't finish.
That said, our form in the last few months tells its own tale. For all the many intersecting reasons widely rehearsed on here, we have not been able to finish games off or convert (genuine, at times) superiority into goals. Today we played with intensity for a while, then lapsed for a while, then played with intensity, then lapsed again. And today I felt that neither we nor Milwall, for all their well-organisedness, looked like a 'proper' play-off side.
I'm not necessarily an "It's been a great season, so who cares?" kind of person, and I definitely see the argument that says you seize the main chance while it's there, then adapt as best you can to the higher level. And given the ongoing handbags between millionaires in our boardroom, I do worry that the main chance may not come around again next year.
But today, overall, says to me that a finish somewhere 7th-9th is probably a decent reflection of where we're currently at. And in that sense, however disappointing it will be if we do miss out, then missing out will probably, in the end, be more or less fair enough.
Booooo ! Shoes off ! Everyone out !
