The thing that has always rattled my cage is this Idea by our last two owners that we would be better off buying over seas Feeder Clubs than building our own Academy.
To be honest I can only think of one Chinese player, many moons ago who was ever brought over with this system.
But I may be wrong, so could anyone remember any others and please explain to me the advantages of this system.....

Likelihoods of getting work permits at the key times would be one

Brighton, CFG and Red Bull utilise the system perfectly.
  1. Buy players who are miles away from first team level (or need a work permit), but have loads of potential.
  2. Sign them up with your feeder club, who play them until they are good enough or have the required WP.
  3. Sign them up to the parent club for a cut-price.
The player benefits from a more gradual route, with less pressure. The feeder club benefits from being able to keep players longer, and have players of better quality than they would otherwise expect. The parent club benefits from developing players "internally", and saves millions in transfer fees.

Just because United World are shite at this, doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Back in the day, under McCabe, Ferencvaros were used as a team where we could place our youngsters, where we could control the loans better. Lowton and I think one or two others were farmed out there until it all went tits up

Need to put in some decent money for that to work to start with which McCabe or the Prince didn't have. Better off to form a good connections with lower league clubs to loan to IMO.

Lowton was last chance saloon wasn’t he from memory? Went there and came back a different player

If you need any justification for United World then look no further than Ismaila Coulibaly. If you think that without Beerschot we’d never have been able to have this prodigious talent at the club.

I wake up thankful on a daily basis.

Imagine being one of the feeder clubs though. Imagine if WE were a feeder club. It's a bit sickening isn't it.

You say that, but Royale Union Saint-Gilloise are having their best spell in years. The Red Bull clubs seem to be doing ok too.

If it works properly, it should benefit everyone

I don’t think either owner has thought they should buy feeder clubs as opposed to developing the Academy.

There was no academy pre McCabe and there have been noises coming from the club in the past year about moving to Cat 1 Academy status. Plus our academy has been one of the most prolific for producing talent in the country in the last 25 years, particularly when you consider the relative performance of the 1st team in that time.

Both forays into foreign ownership have been an unwelcome distraction but little more. In fact McCabe only started getting involved in overseas clubs for the benefit of Scarborough group.
