Anyone remember Don Hutchinson, I’m sure he used to get a hammering just because of how much he cost

How come McBurnie is in there? Isn't a scapegoat specifically in response to a single result / group of results? I don't think he's taken much stick this season for on-field activities, some disappointment maybe but most of it in reasonable context.

No booing particularly. But most on here slag him off for not scoring 25 gazillion goals so far

That's because he has been really poor so far. Nothing to do with scapegoat. His off the field activities make him an arsehole, but scapegoat suggests criticism is unwarranted. Nobody should be beyond criticism ever. Certainly not in these circumstances.
 
My favourites were Nicky Montgomery, Barry Hayles, Michael Doyle, Neil Collins.

Define poor? If he'd cost £7m or £8m nobody would have a problem. He's been no more poor than Robinson or McGoldrick. You could say that McGoldrick has been the worst of the lot as he has missed two glorious chances. They won't come along too often.

Robinson has played more minutes than McBurnie but scored the same amount of goals.

Rather than look at the negatives, let's look at Sharp and Mousset to suggest that their goals/games ratios are the best at the club. Maybe they have earnt their place.

Does a Scapegoat have to be able to play a bit? Because I thought Ian Hamilton should be worried for his life with some of the comments I used to hear about him

Wrong, id be disappointed if he cost 5 million. Robinson isn't the answer either but at least he seems to have some positive attributes but just isn't there yet. And I'll look it how I want thanks.

Wasn't trying to be clever originally. I was being serious. Too many people had written McBurnie off even before this news.

I was once told that you should mirror peoples behaviour, so when someone says "And I'll look it how I want thanks" - they should expect a sarcastic comment back.

Terry Garbutt, nobody ever, was worse than him..... get the chillis just thinking about his performances , I would give him a run for his money now, and I am 66 year fat old codger.......

You were wrong it wasn't a sarcastic reply from me. But you are clearly far too intelligent for everybody else.
 
Lot's of possibilities Monty, Garbett as mentioned, Guthrie, Douggie Brown, Nicky Johns OMG, I know folk raved about Monty but to me he was the complete player, couldn't head, shoot, pass, dribble. In fact where you can bet on 1st goal scorer I always went Monty not to score, I am now a recluse millionaire living in Monaco.

Nick Montgomery. But he wouldn’t be capable of providing half time oranges to this team. So the criticism is somewhat legit.

Paul Ifill. Great player, but was often viewed in frustration. No idea why.
 
Montgomery and Lundstram are perfect scapegoat material as they were both often crap, but would both usually get the blame even if they had a comparatively good game. On occasion Monty was excellent, but would still get blamed for something by people who refused to acknowledge any positive contributions he did make. The likes of Jordan Stewart and Dean Hammond weren't scapegoats at all, just abysmal players who couldn't be arsed and were deservedly slated.

I don't think Coutts was ever scapegoated either, he never looked fit or got involved enough when we first signed him and most of his criticism was earned, when his performances picked up after Wilder came in, so did the praise he got. Basham was usually blamed for being a nesh, lightweight midfielder that the opposition breezed straight past in League 1, but that's what he was, so no scapegoating there.

Most of the criticism for Lundstram this season is how the flat midfield affects the shape, but since Wilder is immune to criticism from some, Lunny still gets the blame, even if plays the best of the three.

Reece was never subbed in his first season (1965-66), in fact the first time he got subbed was when he broke his leg at home to Blackpool in November 1966. During the 1965-66 season (when subs were first introduced) we used only 6 in FL games (at first subs were allowed to come on if a player was too injured to carry on) and they were;

Tony Wagstaff on for Alan Birchenall in the 0-0 draw at Fulham 8/9/65
Barry Wagstaff on for Reg Matthewson in the 1-0 home win against Wendy 18/9/65
Frank Barlow (his debut) on for David Munks (broken leg) in the 6-2 defeat at Arsenal 6/11/65. His first touch was to lose the ball that led to Arsenal scoring.
Alan Birchenall on for Tony Wagstaff in the 2-0 home win against Everton 13/11/65.
Ken Mallender on for Reg Matthewson in the 3-0 home win against Arsenal. 25/4/66. Ken was our first sub to score.
Barry Wagstaff on for Reg Matthewson in the 2-0 defeat at Chelsea . 7/5/66


Reece never got subbed in the 1967-68 season. The most times he got subbed was 3 during the 1970-71 season.

Ah Andy Taylor. Terrible before the season long injury, but goodness me was he bad when he came back
