Sheffield United midfielder Ahmed Fathi has played down Zamalek claims on reaching an agreement to join the Cairo club.

Early reports revealed that the 22-year-old will travel to his home country on Thursday to sign a contract with the Egypt giants but the player has opened up that no such move is about to happen any time soon.

"I haven't sat down with any official from Zamalek. I'm very happy at Sheffield," Fathi told FilGoal.

"There is no reason for me to depart; Sheffield boss Bryan Robson treats me very well. I may play in the Championship opener against Colchester on Saturday."

The Egypt international moved to England in January from Egyptian club Ismaili and has often expressed his desire to see out his contract with Sheffield.

Sheffield United have sent a fax to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), confirming that Ahmed Fathi will be sold to Zamalek.

"Sheffield said they reached an agreement with Zamalek that will see Fathi heading to the Cairo giants," EFA secretary general Salah Hosni told Egyptian TV.

"They also said that they will send player's ITC to the EFA within the coming few hours in order for Zamalek to register him in their local squad."

However, the Egypt international midfielder said he knows nothing about the alleged agreement.

"Nobody told me about this agreement and neither Zamalek officials nor Sheffield ones contacted me."

"I'm astonished and I completely refuse such deals, they have to ask me before making any agreements. I don't want to join Zamalek and will not be forced to play with them.

"If Sheffield want to release me then I will look for another European club because I don't want to return to Egypt," he added.

Zamalek have announced that they signed the 22-year-old on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Someone should tell these people that Fathi plays for Sheffield UNITED, not Sheffield!

I don't know if I'd be sad to see him go or not, to be honest. If he has to go, I'd like to get someone in to replace him. I think he's had a few decent games but sometimes hasn't looked up to scratch, and there's been a lot of negative press about him recently.

Well he's in the squad for Saturday's match:

Bryan Robson has refuted speculation that has linked Egypt international Ahmed Fathi with a move away from Bramall Lane.

Recent media reports linked midfielder Fathi with Egyptian side Zamalek, but Robson has poured cold water on the rumour.

Robson said: "I haven't heard anything about that. While the transfer window is open, people will always talk about players coming in and players going out - you can never stop the speculation.

"Ahmed has been training with the boys and he's a big part of the squad and, as far as I'm concerned, he's a Sheffield United player."

Robson revealed that Fathi is set to be included in Saturday's squad for the Coca-Cola Championship opener versus Colchester United at the Lane.

"He's in the squad for Saturday," said Robson.

Meanwhile, Robson says that he is continuing his search for an attacking midfielder to add to his squad.

He added: "There's nothing to report at this moment in time.

"If I bring a player in, it needs to be a player better than the quality that we already have in the squad - if that player does become available then I'll try to make it happen for Sheffield United."
