I just don't get the fixation with Clough and Adkins, we were shit yes but we've been shit for years.

The club has appointed a new management team and consigned these two to the past, wouldn't it be healthy to do the same as supporters?

True but it would be wise to learn from our mistakes when appointing future managers - especially the board. Clough was all about his old man's name - his record in management was Steve McClarene-sque. Adkins? I'd be very wary of employing a bloke who is out of work. They're usually unemployed for a reason and just a few months 'out of the game' can mean you miss out on what is happening. I never though Adkins' heart was in it and he thought he could repeat what had worked for him a few years ago. As we now know, it resulted in a wasted season and - without Billy's goals - could have ended in a relegation scrap.

he did say in some of his interviews that him and AK had been to watch us play a few times last season

And he still came???:D

Let's all massage history and pretend that Nigel Adkins hasn't achieved a great deal more in football management than Chris Wilder.

Let's also pretend that Andy Butler wasn't shite and the fall out was entirely Nigel Clough's fault, just like the blameless De Juve...
Niger Adkins has had more success in English football than pep guardiola and Vicente del bosque combined
Let that one sink in

Calm down dears, Clough and Adkins never had the advantage of being able at a stroke to dump half of the entire squad of shite that has been assembled over the years. The massive savings in wages have given Wilder some room to manouver and I'm betting our recruitment up to present has not cost McCabe a penny. All going well so far though not as fast as the fans or Wilder for that matter would have liked, the big test will come if McCabe has to get his hand in his pocket. HEY! remember the worlds biggest Blade is still the owner.

A slight exaggeration there, LLD. There were those of us who were concerned at the delay in getting SOME players in. We have been shown the error of our ways and have even more faith in CW now. And for the record book, yes, clearing up the mess left by previous managers who failed to draft in recognised centre backs that were ours. Playing people out of position and ultimately, failing to get us to where we want to be.

77 players in would've been a Cloughism.

It would appear I'd have a few more shandys than I realised last night

It that old pre season optimism again...if we make a bad start the same suspects now praising Wilder will be on saying ' Sh1te signings, what do you expect, I'd never heard of any of em except Duffy and Fleck' !

Did they play for Scunthorpe as well?...
I'm not trying to say he's fluked all his achievements but just that when you look at the Southampton team he inherited it makes that particular promotion slightly less impressive

Its difficult not to see why both were employed both had led teams out of this division. It shows there is no sure fire way of selecting a manager.Barnsley probably never thought in their wildest dreams theyd picked someone who got so much so right so quickly. Had no cv at all.
Its always down to the manager in the end. They pick the squad the tactics and the level of motivation.all a board can do is hope the man clicks. Its always a gamble.one weve nit won in recent sessons.maybe just maybe we are helping our odds a bit

Would that be the Andy Butler who made the grand total of one competitive appearance for us? Who are any of us to say whether or not he was shite based on that evidence?

He must have got something about him to have been Donny's player of the season.
Butler would have done us a job that season.
One of Cloughs major bollocks

I never realised some promotions were regarded better than others. Whatever next, penalties don't count as much as 30 yard screamers?

A team he had inherited from Alan Pardew, who was sacked for failing to achieve enough with the same set of players. Adkins clearly has some managerial sklils, he just didn't show them whilst managing us.

A similar case is sometimes made against Danny Wilson and the argument that anybody should have been able to get the set of players he inherited with us up.. When in fact, previous regimes and the same players got us relegated and many on here, (myself included) considered Ched a £15k a week waste of money, who nobody would take off our hands.

Two years ago, at this time, we had Maguire and Collins in place and new signings Butler and Maghaey brought in to challenge. Thought we might be OK but . . .

Think I'll just wait a few weeks and see what transpires on the pitch myself rather than start a wank fest . . . .

Didn't say some are better than others, just more impressive, a promotions a promotion. I was just making the point that his promotion from league 1 with Southampton wasn't as impressive as say his ones with Scunthorpe.

Agree he obviously has some managerial skills, perhaps it was just the wrong place at the wrong time with us or he's lost his touch. Strange really that despite failing with that team Pardew then got the Newcastke job!

And Warnock wasted more money than either of them. Yet where's the "are you paying attention big nose" thread?

Move on, wilder is a new man in charge who looks like he has a plan. Concentrating on the mistakes of the past seems to be of little value.
Warnock was a level higher though to be fair and for one season two levels higher

Who ever comes in or out, we will see where we are come our first match, I can't see us doing another gillingham can you?
