This is a brilliant fan-run charity in Liverpool. I spoke to the bloke who started it last year, and I'm planning to set up a collection at the Lane. I'm posting here for advice. Does anyone know who at the club I should contact regarding attaining permission to set something up?

Just like every other time, you’ll get a bunch of cunts on here saying food banks should be closed down and people fend for themselves in 5..4.. 3..

Brilliant idea 👏 I'm certain the club would support this, any reason they didn't there's plenty of fans, myself included, would love to make sure it happened one way or another.

I mean I agree that they should be closed down, but that should be because we live in a society where people's basic needs are met, which unfortunately isn't the case.

I can't see why they wouldn't support it, maybe they could say it's political?

No, I can't imagine any reason why they wouldn't support it......they offered to help me when I asked about helping equip a team in Africa....but it's a while ago, and I can't for the life of me remember who I contacted.

Looking forward to supporting this 👌

Not a good look
Foodbanks are EVIL. They're not a necessary evil. They're an imposed evil. By all means contribute to them on the one hand, but fight with the other one, with all your might, to ensure we don't need them in our supposed First World Society.
Linking Foodbanks to a greedy Multi Million industry like Football emphasises how grotesque they are.
Ferraris & Foodbanks, Fuck That.
Too many Florence Nightingales
Not enough Robin Hoods

You can put that on a T-Shirt if you like....

Spot on. How we have the gall to call ourselves a rich developed country but we cant ensure the basic human need of food is accessible to all via wages and, yes, benefits.

I agree with your wider point but until change comes, people are still going hungry! Foodbanks aren't evil. They are the one thing between hunger and starvation for hundreds of thousands of people.

I'm afraid I haven't got it in me to decide whether a hungry person should eat or not, on the whim of someone putting a tin of Spam in a bucket. Oooohhhh it's your lucky day mate, someone has left some Chunky Soup....
Grotesque. Victorian. Verging on Medieval.
So you though you'd like to change the world
Decided to stage a jumble sale
For the poor

With all due respect, fuck off with your patronising shit. I'm doing what I can.

I do voluntary work in a food bank. To my knowledge the club has sanctioned collection in the past for the S2 Foodbank which is easily googled. Can I respectfully suggest that you contact them? They will know who to talk to and how it has been organised in the past.

Our northern neighbours collect (and have been very generous) to the S6 Foodbank, where I volunteer - I am sure the same would apply at this end of the City. But rather then approach SUFC you might find it easier to work via the food bank who have probably got structures in place already.

As a matter of fact the idea did come from Liverpool wherewith LFC and Everton collect.

They are often hungry at the whim of a DWP official - starvation is an instrument of government policy

Reminds of that brill 70s song.

In your Liverpool slums.
They look in the dustbin for something to eat
They find a dead rat and they think it's a treat
In your Liverpool slums

Spoiling them with tins of Spam and chunky soup.

Are things better these days?

Without debating the whys and wherefores, here's a link to food banks including those on this side of Sheffield if you wish to donate. Many are reporting that stocks are running low as they got to the end of the school holidays and they get a surge of donations after Christmas but there's a lean period before.

Most accept monetary donations to help with storage/running vehicles to collect food donations.

It would be good to know if SUFC's caterers are signed up to a scheme to ensure that "waste" food is directed to those who can use it, rather than it being thrown in the bin. Both Ben's Centre and the Salvation Army are not a million miles away from Bramall Lane.

I work with a lot of vulnerable families who often frequent food banks. Unfortunately they are a necessity, for more people than most think.

If as a club we decide it is correct to support any of the local charities with their work I hope that we can do it on the quiet. No sky sports news piece “how we are doing our bit” I know of families who have gone short when the look north cameras have visited in the past.

It’s hard to hold on to your dignity.

Things are dreadful and getting worse.

I think that last time they did this it was done on the quiet. Certainly the ones at Liverpool and Everton do. S6 foodbank was different in that the club (our city neighbours) presented a cheque before a game. But it was discreet

I am bit ambivalent about this. I worked at the food bank for 2 years before I mentioned it to anyone. But then one week I got so angry about the state of a particular client I started telling people how bad things were. (And they have increased massively since then)

Generally when I tell people about them I add - "This government believes in starving people of food as an instrument of policy".

Great idea, could have a collection point in the new family hub, and any pies etc left over after the match given to the homeless.

There is a way of donating left over food.
In peace, can I just point out that this isn't what food banks are about and they rarely deal with the homeless. Allmost bt definition the people who come to food banks are not homeless - they have somewhere to cook. Also most food banks tend not to have food that goes out of date quickly - they are rarely open every day. At S6 FB where I volunteer we have some raw vegetables that come from an allotment society most weeks but they go quickly.

You are correct though there are people that feed the homeless and they could use the stuff.
