Love it Gaz!!

Welcome back Alehouse Adams.

I still class the 'you don't know what you are doing' chant v Bristol City as a real highlight of last few years watching United - especially as we won the game.

You only seem to post on stuff related to McCabe, blackwell or adams. You can't lose on this game can you...

Dear oh dear, you're a nice bloke in person...

Should be interesting. To be fair to Adams, he was on a hiding to nothing and even Fergie would have struggled to keep us up.

I hope Adams gets a good reception. I don't think he was ever good enough, but he was giving his all and it hurt him as a Blade as much as it hurt us that he couldn't turn it around.

I disagree. We were outside the relegation places when Adams took over. We ended up being relegated by a clear six points

My thoughts exactly Darren. We looked like we lost all hope in the first couple of games after Adams took over: I think Adams lacked any ideas of how he could turn the situation around when all he probably needed to do was instil some confidence and consistent tactics.

The fact that it took Adams until his 13th game to register a win says it all: the game at Scunthorpe when we were 2-0 up after 7 minutes and still managed to lose epitomised his reign.

Indeed. I've worked it out before, but if we had carried on the points per game ratio that we had under Speed, we would have ended up with something like 56 points and relatively comfortable safety.

This is true, but the squad lost Bartley, Read and Yeates just after that (and Britton, who despite media adulation was largely hopeless for us). It would have been hard to keep up even that poor standard when these players were removed. We were not staying up if Adams had been as "effective" as Speed, because he already had to do more with less.

This is not to say Adams wasn't a disaster - he was, and bears the second largest share of blame for relegation in my eyes, behind McCabe.

But then, at the same time as he lost those players, he got in Bent, Doyle, Collins, Lowry, Mattock, Vokes and Riise. Those players (or the funds he had available to buy/loan 7 players who would not have been on peanuts) should have comfortably offset the loss of the ones you mention

The first 5 you name were poor at best, Vokes hardly played. riise was a good signing, I agree. I think it is hard to argue we had a better side after the transfer window.

Of course, Adams signed these players....

Top stuff Darren. Get yer sen to Lane with me and we'll boo him all game - cannot wait me.

I hope he gets the complete opposite. A truly pathetic manager - albeit working for a joke of an owner.

The difference is, i think had speed stayed, he probably would have attracted better players.

Apart from trying to stick up for Lee Croft against our army of expert lip readers on John Street who grass people to police for racism if they argue with a black person - it just has to be racist don't you see Swiss? Mind you, I think you agred with me?

Yes I think i agreed in parts. And of course there is always an exception to any rule

Exactly. He had funds to get decent replacements (and more) and didn't. In addition, Doyle and Collins have subsequently shown they are not as poor as they appeared under Adams (against poorer opposition admittedly).

Got to agree with you on this. We did not drop into the bottom three until Adams took over as manager. It also seems to me (as you have also mentioned on this thread) that he was given sufficient financial support to ensure we stayed out of that area of the table.

How many league matches did we win under him? Was it 4 or 5. Don't think it was any more than that, which over the course of half a season (as I'm sure he'd agree himself) is an appalling record.

4

8/3/1 Forest H 2-1
19/3/11 Leeds H 2-0
23/4/11 Bristol C H 3-2
25/4/11 Readingh A 3-2

The last two came when we were pretty much in a hopless position.

It was beginning to look pretty hopeless by the time we beat Forest! Once we got into the bottom 3, did we ever get out again for any brief moments, or was that it?

The strange thing is that we obviously had the ability in the squad to do better. Forest, Leeds and Reading were 3 of the better sides in the league and yet we beat them, and also I think we drew our home game against Reading (also whilst Adams was manager). The problem would seem to have been either tactical, motivational or both.

Adams' record in charge of United was dreadful.

P23 W4 D5 L14 F23 A49 Pts 17.

If he'd been in charge for the whole season we would have ended up (extrapolating those figures) with 34 points from 46 games and just shy of 100 goals conceded.

I still can't believe he got given the job.

I went to the fans forum when Adams and Corky were introduced. They seemed completely out of their depth to me at that point and nothing that happened after that made me feel any more confident in them.

The purse strings were loosened to fund several signings but none of them really seemed to help.
