A shameless throw of the dice here for anyone interesting in more clever stats that monitor those players who are best at creating good chances often. This one includes a breakdown of the SUFC leaders for the expected assist metric so far. Spoiler alert Oli Norwood does create as much as our eyes tell us, he is better than bannan (proven...just) and K.Freeman is a huge huge plus in our side for creativity.

For such a key player to the way we play, I'm surprised to see Fleck so low.

Is he the player who plays the pass before the pass that gets counted in the xA calculations??

Fleck is just a box to box beast and is the force behind the assists. Norwood is just simply sublime and at £2m could up there with the best bargain buys we have ever had.

Interesting on fleck pal. In my next article I write about how I track exactly what you're talking about, the build up play key Players, the pass before a pass before an assist that sets up a chance. I can tell you now our top player for that last season was john fleck, this season it's Chris Basham so far!

I actually track this (called secondary assists, pass before a pass that sets up a chance. Last year fleck was one of top 5 in division for this, hes decent this year but not incredible yet. Playing okay but not quite hit his standards of last season...which is frightening to think really lol

Fleck isn't usually the one who plays the final ball. I think Freeman/Duffy will be our main assistees, Duffy created the most goal scoring chances last season if that stays the same lets hope our front line can put them away.

How are you recording these stats? You are going through videos of every game and recording them manually?

Do you have any figures for the Rolls-Royce before his injury? My eyes tell me he was at the heart of everything we do. Maybe not always the final assist; maybe not the pass before, but invariably the hub around which our Tuftyball is played.

Great article, as always.

The in-depth pieces I've seen from you so far have focused on attacking stats (xA, xG). Is it fair to say that it's easier to measure these things in interesting ways than it is a player's defensive contributions? I know you record tackles, clearances, etc, but is there a way to do a deep dive with those numbers the way you have with offensive contributions?

Shouldn't Norwood have two assists? One for Egan v Norwich and another for O'Connell v Aston Villa?

Great article, really enjoyed this one and the previous stuff I read about xG.... think I might actually be starting to become interested in footy stats

The number 1 question in football analytics. I have some things I'm working on which I'll write about but you're spot on attacking metrics are much easier

Would expected key passes be a useful stat? So if a player makes a cross from a certain area, you could say that the cross would have a 30% chance of being a key pass. That would allow you to use expected key passes (xK?) to see how well a player performs given the situation they are in. For example if you saw that Freeman completes harder xK passes than Baldock does then you could say Freeman is better at crossing.
