That was nothing against JB, just that we were clearly lacking in other more pressing positions.
Players on the books that we had on our books capable of playing right-back at the time Included Craig Alcock and Ben Davies as specialist right-backs, plus Chris Basham who had played there at previous clubs, plus Ryan Flynn who’d impressed there that season (arguably he’d been the best of the bunch). Then we signed a third specialist right-back in Freeman. Then, a day later and with now 5 potential options at right back, we blew the remaining budget on Brayford.
And all while we had a season-long gap in the middle of defence. It was mad. I think at the time we were so overpowered by disbelief that we’d been able to bring Brayford in (who at the time Russell Slade was starting regularly in three league above) and had been so underwhelmed by the league games that season that we collectively chose to ignore the utter recklessness of it.
