Ex-Blade spotting

Arguably should be in a different section, but this is Blades related!!
Anyway, I ended up at Burton today in hospitality through work.
Loads of Blades connections, as I'm sure you know. It was a really poor first half but improved after Peterborough scored after 52 mins, with the game finishing 1-1. For those interested, here is my take in the former Blades:
Clough - shouted a lot!
Crosby and Garner - didn't do much...
Jamie Murphy - played up front in a 2 in the first half and on the left wing in a 3 in the 2nd. Looked threatening but didn't really have an chances. Drilled one straight at the keeper from 20odd yards and missed a glancing header in the last minute.
SQuinny - spent most of his time tackling rather than passing! Played at the base of the midfield 3.
Kieran Wallace (do you remember him?!) - played left CB in a 3 in the first half and a 2 in the 2nd. Looked OK, had a couple of dodgy moments and was at fault for the goal, completely missing a header. (the left WB/FB was massive and awful on the ball, so I've no idea why they 2 were that way round in the formation!!)
John-Joe O'Toole (a loanee, easily forgotten!) - played CB, in the middle of the 3. Burton tried to play out from the back through him and he looked decent. Unfortunately, his only mistake was getting stuck under the ball before Wallace's missed header.
Brayford - right of the 3 CB, then RB. Lead the team by example after going behind, although he's lost a yard of pace (as have Quinn and Murphy) and he scored the equaliser, heading in from a corner.

I know this has turned into a mammoth post, but also of note - ex-Pigs Beevers (he's built like a giraffe!) and Boyd (came on late on and did nothing but tangle with Quinn before they embraced at the final whistle) played for Peterborough.

I'd hand my notice in if I were you! Any employer that makes their staff go and watch Burton Albion can't be any good!

Hope you had an enjoyable day out though. There is, at least, some decent beer in that town. And a really good chip shop on Wetmore Road.

Can't complain about free food and football! Unfortunately, the guy serving me didn't know what bitter was (🙈) , so I said bring me any of them. He brought Wothingtons... But again, it was free so I wasn't going to make a fuss over it!!

O'Toole in the back three sounds bizarre, he was an attacking midfielder for us wasn't he?, seem to remember him scoring a scruffy header for us, but I could be wrong. Always appeared to be as tough as old boots and not scared to get stuck in.

Kieran Wallace came as a package with Che Adams, he was (I think) very young when he played for us, liked to race down the wing.

I caught Brayford's goal on Quest last night, decent enough finish, same as he did to us in pre-season at their place.

I didn't want Brayford (and a couple of others didn't too), you may remember such statements as, 'if there's one thing I've learned from Football Manager it's not to blow your budget on one player'. And that's pretty much what we did with Brayford a right back, one of the least influential positions on the pitch.

It was of course a tongue in cheek comment but with a lot of truth around it.
Invariably the star signing would get injured, as happened to Brayford.
And there are significant differences between a right back who only left his half for corners and a RWB who is up and down the pitch all the time. Clough's teams are counter attacking whilst Wilder's play this overload style. So for those of us who could see beyond Brayford being a great player (which he was, we didn't thing we could sign him) and wondered how he would affect the performances of the team it didn't seem a cost effective move and that was before we even think about what the wages of a current Premier League player dropping to League One were going to be. No surprise he was one of the first out of the door when Wilder arrived.
 
Brayford was talismanic on loan but quite a few fans didn't want us to effectively spend most of the budget on a right back, myself included.

That was nothing against JB, just that we were clearly lacking in other more pressing positions.
 
Not only am I surprised Quinny is still going he's relatively young (compared to how old I thought he was) at 33

I was definitely in this camp too.

Don't know what this football manager thing is but I can distinctly remember saying that you don't win leagues by paying a million for a right back.

Maybe naive but when the talk of buying Brayford outright was first broached, I assumed there would also be decent cash for other positions.

When it became likely that wasn't the case I thought he then became a luxury. Nothing against him whatsoever, and obviously anyone could have picked up his injury.

Clough's recruitment was oddly scattergun. Some great signings but some utterly bizarre and questionable.

I've nowt against Brayford either, in fact I really enjoyed his enthusiasm and watching him play but it was just bizarre to blow everything we had on a right back.
 
Article in today's Sunday Life (the main NI Sunday newspaper) about the career of Michael Guy. He had a brief period at the blades in the late 70s and then came home to have a decent Irish league career. I have played in a number of charity games alongside him and was unaware that he spent time with the blades. He finished playing junior football 2 year's ago and has just turned 67!

Scored the winner against Charlton in April 1979, both teams were battling against relegation. After that Charlton had only one game left to play and we had three left needing three points to make us safe from relegation. Few days later we lost at home to 10 men Blackburn who were already relegated. In our last away game at Cambridge Mike Guy nearly equalised Cambridge's opener when hit shot hit against the bar. We lost 1-0 and Charlton won their last match meaning we had to win by 9 goals at home to Leicester a few days later (drew 2-2)
