It's been said week in week out, not just my thoughts, but the thoughts of the masses....We've missed that drive in the middle of the park. We've been lethargic, slow, sluggish, no real drive.

I can't say all, but a good few wanted McAtee and Doyle back in there together (me included)...

I think tonight is a testament as to why that was the right decision. We started with energy, we started on the front foot, we passed forwards and the front lines caused a number of early problems.

The Sunderland goal in my opinion was a lazy blip. We gassed ourselves a bit and Berge went for the dredded hoofed clearance, as a result we find players caught out of position and they capitalise. Stupid goal to give away, overall against the run of play and very much our own fault (namedly Berge's).

But the mentality switch was there, mainly due to that positive minded, midfield engine room. The two Man City lads need to take a bow, it was all about them in combination tonight. They understamd one and other fantastically, but they just have so much positive drive. A lot has to be said about the coaching that they have received at the elite really.... literally everything is played forwards and if there is space in front of you, then you get yourself into it..... major difference.

Earlier today I found myself wondering about heat maps (boring I know). I'm not going to bash Norwood because his stats speak for themselves, he's an integral part of the squad. But I have found a real annoyance and i am not sure if it is just me...

I find the overall lack of tempo in midfield leads to strikers drifting out onto the flanks far too often.... It pisses me off to see Ndiaye in particular (but all of the other strikers as well), drifting out wide. What use are strikers on the flanks with an empty box??

I would have liked to see a heat map of the strikers with the static midfield that we have had with Norwood and Berge in recent weeks and months, throw Fleck in there and even more so....

Suddenly you throw drive back into midfield (McAtee and Doyle) and you have midfield players driving down the flanks again and linking up. As a result, you then have forwards in much narrower and attacking mind positions....Strikers in the box where they belong!

I'm not deluded enough to believe that the above is the total solution. There are so many positives again tonight... Robbo's a Rock... Gorgeous george was a very well disciplined 'ferocious george'..... etc etc.

But in my opinion, that set up tonight was nearer the attacking minded, naughty, dangerous Sheffield United side that we all love to see....

Save the likes for the positive contributions of the players, not for my post.....

You cannot start with 2 of the 3 of Berge, Fleck and Norwood ever ever ever again...

Berge still needs to ger back on par for me, but he was adequate alongside two famtastic young City lads tonight...

Listen, I don't want to full blown slate Norwood and Fleck. They have roles to play.....

I'm shock that Hecky left Doyle on so long, I genuinely thought he would rattle and drag him early into the second due to his yellow.... but thankfully he didnt.

Norwood and Fleck came on and showed experience late on. A bit of added aggression, ruffled a few feathers and pressed.... it was effective enough.

Even if we hadn’t have won tonight it wasn’t important. That’s much closer to the team we want to see, it was energetic and quicker in every department.

We weren’t at our best (still arguably our best post WC performance) but I texted my mates at 1-0 saying ‘much more like it’, because despite losing we had a plan and it was an enjoyable watch.

Has to be that midfield from now on, only 9 games left and their average age is about 21. They can play I’m sure!

Sky showed the average position of United players after about 20 minutes, and they were all in Sunderland’s half.

Even the last few minutes defending we kept a high line, got our feet on loose balls, and press around the back like terriers (not Huddersfield). In fact, we forced their keeper to kick it straight out in stoppage time due to an excellent press.

I was tuning in to the Sunderland forum during the match
and I never thought I'd ever see it said by any opposition fans but a few Sunderland fans actually said

"they're winning midfield, we can't live with them because they are too big and too quick".
other in match comments were "these are a very good team, we can't compete"

Fair enough the 2nd half was different, especially the last 15 mins when we went into our shell hanging on.

Yeah it’s been very apparent how tired we get last 20 mins or so, then there’s a lot of hanging on. As long as we get the result it’s all fine and dandy. Of course if we lose it opens up a lot of criticism

Tonight proved how slow the midfield has been.

We have been saying this for ages now and suddenly we field a young midfield and the energy is there. When you have two players like Doyle and Macca it also means Berge can get away with being casual.

I still think there is a place for Coulibaly as well.

Amazing having a mobile, fast, strong, agile No 9 makes all the difference.

Why did we spent 3/4 of the season fucking about with Sharp when Jebbison has needed minutes!

We were excellent tonight allover, lots of energy and pace. Well done.

I will say though, Sunderland have some good attacking talent and gave us a few scares in Ba, Clarke and Roberts.

I have backwards feet so am incapable of starting on the front foot.
i can bang fuck out of a piano though if i lay on my belly backwards with my legs akimbo.
Uh!

So happy Jebbo started, his pace and directness will always cause issues, he’s so raw and a much better option than Sharp. Norwood has been for most of the season but as soon as a team marks him out of the game we go to shit, Doyle provides more movement for midfield and defenders to get the ball forward. Great decisions all round by Hecky, we should have done it sooner but 6 points clear we will take that!

The two city lads, Baldock back, Jebbo up top with some pace... By George the penny might just have dropped.
