My hooves may be cloven, but I'll defend Wilder nonetheless. What would it take for him to prosper in the PL? Firstly, players which are good enough. Then he'd want team players, no egos, lads whose heads don't drop in adversity. Basically, what he had en route to the PL. But that situation was always going to be a difficult task at this level. The first problem is that age-old one where Sheffield football is concerned, namely money, or a lack of it. You cannot get value-for-money players in this country who can play at this level, so you have to be able to use the foreign market. There really is no alternative for the vast majority of PL clubs. It's probably no exaggeration to say that a club's knowledge of the foreign leagues and players is as important as the identity of the manager. It was Wilder's in-depth knowledge of the lower leagues that got the club to where it is, but it's his lack of knowledge about players overseas which is IMO causing the problems and blighting recruitment. That situation has to change pronto. Then you've got the conundrum of the changing of the guard. Because these new lads will be on sizeable wages, and for all we know egos to match. That doesn't do a deal for team spirit, but it's all the worse when the high-earning newcomers don't seem to the old guard to be any better than they are. So the problem for me is not Wilder the manager. If he can replicate the situation he had prior to the PL, then I think United will do well. But he definitely needs help with recruitment, and frankly it's the chairman's job to make sure that the necessary networks overseas are put in place.
