Good win on Saturday, not the greatest performance ever, but nevertheless a win is a win.
However, I just wanted to say something about the vitriol streaming out at Simmo from some of our 'fans'.

I appreciate he's made a fair few fckups this season, and I was pleased when Long replaced him for those couple of games, however, he currently remains the best goalkeeper we have at the club, so I was somewhat annoyed when after he kicked a backpass out of play a bloke in front of me (and a few others too) stood up and directed a stream of abuse at him! (Bearing in mind it wasn't exactly a simple backpass either, so I don't know what they expected him to do, juggle it past the strikers, down the pitch and finish off with an acrobatic volley into the top corner?!!)

I really can't see what people expect this to achieve? It's hardly going to do his confidence any good, and with little prospect of us getting rid of him then surely we need to be getting behind him and boosting his confidence. He is (when confident) a decent keeper and should be far better than the majority in this league, and certainly better than most of the Championship youth team reserve keepers, which is about all we'd be able to attract on loan at the minute!

Well put, but it seems to be hard-wired into the DNA of many Blades fans to moan for moaning's sake. 'Goalie makes mistake.' shock, horror. I also abhor the stick Ched gets - he didn't dream up his fee or wages, and is by far one of our more capable players.

Just for the record...

Madine 11 in 19 (+ 0 subs)

Ched 7 in 8 (+6 sub)

So why are Unitedites so 'glass half-empty' compared to our illustrious neighbours, whose one-eyed optimism knows no bounds? Sure, we've had more than our share of disappointments, can't deny it. Also, the bias shown by our local 'media' (some don't agree, but it exists, trust me) makes the idiot Wendy fans believe they are Barcelona to our Accrington Stanley. And we sell our best players. Which team doesn't? I don't suppose Blackpool fans are overjoyed seeing Charlie Adam turning it on for Liverpool. It's football. It happens to all teams.

I get as pissed off/disappointed as the next fan, but would never dream of booing a player. I suppose those who do must be extremely good and faultless in their own occupation...

If it's the situation I think it is I noticed the moans from the crowd. They probably didn't think the ref would have judged it as a back pass. I think Simonsen was right to not take any chances and agree with you regarding the abuse.

Same thing around me. I think Simmo was asking the ref if he could pick it up while the ball was coming to him, fair enough if you ask me. This didnt go down well with the creature near me who wanted him dead for asking.

I thought Simmo did the right thing in booting it away, I personally didn't think it was a backpass but you never know with some referees, and in that situation I think 9/10 keepers would have done the same thing, why people decided to get on his back for that is beyond me

I seem to think they were berating the Ref for not answering Simmos request. That certainly was the feeling around me anyway.

Simmo did well Saturday, I could clearly hear the man yelling to his defence ,whilst in the kop net, from my seat in Westfield corner.
Much better than he used to be for communication.:)

Worst thing about the incident when Simonsen kicked the 'back pass' straight out was that it came from a deflection and Simmo asked the ref permission to pick it up who didn't respond in either way. The ref was probably one of the most arrogant I have seen.

Sat in the middle of the kop I didn't notice any negative response towards Simmo. Perhaps individuals are too heavily swayed by the odd dickhead sat in earshot?

I know that it's not the view of a football purist(whatever that might be) but there is the old adage "If in doubt kick it out" I have to say that the collective glass at the Lane has almost always been half empty. We look back on the Woodward era, what a special player he was but, at the start of his career he received lots of stick from a minority of boo boys on the kop.

i think the greatest road to redemption was john gannon.. he used to get so much stick it was incredible until the penny dropped and everyone realised that all of the freekicks and corners deano scored from were taken by him.. and now he's a legend .. apparently
