Egan’s ‘goal’

Tom, it's a game where human decision making will always cause debate, so to sanitise every possible situation that can possibly be disputed is to remove good decisions as well as bad. The fact that VAR seems to cause weekly disputes suggests that it's no better or worse than the referees you mention, so we're left with a system that costs a fortune and contributes little in terms of progress, leaving the majority of supporters baffled by the decision making that's employed.

Whatever the pros and cons that surround referees, and I agree that they need help in certain situations, my preference is that referees should be allowed to officiate with, where necessary, the help of the fourth official that was brought in to do this exact job. It may not be perfect, but is it any less effective than what we've seen from VAR up until this part of the season.....the answer appears to be that all we've received from VAR is controversy, most of which divides opinion and remains unconvincing in it's application.

I 100% agree, just saying that's why we're where we are.

There's a joy in football in getting away with one, and over the course of the season you usually get a few stinkers against you too, so it evens out, but the standard of officiating has fell off a cliff and the stakes get higher and higher so something needed to be done.

Unfortunately though, instead of watering the plant and giving if a good prune, they spray painted the dead brown leaves green.

Pension off some of the old fat refs that can't keep up with play, spend money training more assistants and referees, facilities around the country, etc.

VAR has its uses and with tweaks will be fine going forward, the problem is the referees overseeing it's wider implementation and use on match days.

Sorry mate not saying they were wrong but when you're there ref gives goal Brighton players ready to kick off you're euphoric then bump and for it to happen twice plus diabolical refereeing it's ruining the experience not a pop at you

Totally agree. The VAR experience is shit. I knew it wasn't a pop fella I was genuinely wondering if there had been a decision you thought was wrong. But agreed, it doesn't work in football like in other sports.

Sadly I think its here to stay so they need to make it better. I'd say they need to mic up Stockley Park so not only the ref but everyone in the ground can hear the reasons for the decision.

Still crap but better than not having a clue what the hell is going on.

Didn’t Southampton have a goal where their player basically rolled it with his hand and VAR completely missed it the other week? Yet more inconsistency with VAR.

We had the ball in the net 3 times yesterday and not once did I celebrate properly. It’s complete fucking wank and wants binning until they find a way of using it that actually works.

I know some people are against the challenges thing like they have in cricket and tennis, but if a defending team really don’t see the worth in checking something then VAR should not be getting involved.

The handball rule is also complete bollocks. The way they are refereeing games at the moment is so robotic, there’s no common sense being applied anymore and it’s just stupid. Nothing about it is human. What happened to just letting the referee, referee the game. They need to start letting them have the final say again.

I’ve said this before but worth repeating I think.

The point of football is scoring goals. As a supporter in the stadium the biggest joy you get or indeed despair is when a goal is scored.

The only real impact that VAR has had so far is to rule goals out for minimal infractions which in many cases it is not accurate enough to be sure of.

The thing that I thought would be stopped by VAR like shirt pulling in the box isn’t being overturned.

Why would you want a system that reduces goals scored and decreases the supporter experience it makes no sense

Referee gave the goal, so had to be ‘clear and obvious’ to overrule it - I’ve watched it 6 times now and still can’t tell whether he handled it or not! If VAR is to have a chance of winning people round, they should be forced to release the actual footage that convinced them that the ref’s decision was wrong.
Deli Ali allowed to use his hands with impunity. Consistency is the issue.

Yes thst defensive handballs... i.e. conceding a penalty.

Attacking handbslls are always a foul if leading to a goal.

The actual law:

Handball
Law 12
Changes
• Deliberate handball remains an offence
• The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick:
• the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm
• a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm
and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity
• the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally
bigger
• the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the
player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)

The following will not usually be a free kick, unless they are one of the above
situations:
• the ball touches a player’s hand/arm directly from their own head/body/foot or
the head/body/foot of another player who is close/near
• the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which is close to their body and has not
made their body unnaturally bigger
•if a player is falling and the ball touches their hand/arm when it is between their
body and the ground to support the body (but not extended to make the body
bigger)
•If the goalkeeper attempts to ‘clear’ (release into play) a throw-in or deliberate
kick from a team-mate but the ‘clearance’ fails, the goalkeeper can then handle
the ball.

As you can see the interpretations about intent or deflections are ONLY if it isnt one of the top situations.

Shitty I know, but it was correctly disallowed.

Fair enough - misunderstood it. Still totally disagree with the rule itself, mind! As another said, I think that Egan goal was going in regardless of whether it brushed his hand

I still want our penalty for handball against Southampton.

There's no way that anyone could be sure if it touched his hand or not from the angles available. I'm convinced it went in off the top of his thigh after seeing it about a dozen times. If it did touch his hand, it must have just brushed the hairs on the back of it. How the fuck could they tell from those camera angles. VAR needs binning. End of.
Neither a clear nor obvious error

It was going in anyway

VAR got both big decisions right yesterday in line with the current rules of the game.

In relation to the Egan incident, the handball rule is currently a bit of a mess. I don’t think the ball was going in until it hit his hand. But I also don’t think it was a deliberate use of the hand. So whether or not that should stand is up for debate. It’s a very difficult one to call I think.

On the basis that I wouldn’t be too pleased if it was against us, I’m swaying towards:

But defensively there seems to be all sorts of new insertions - hand in an unnatural position, intent, did they have time to move their hand etc.

VAR seems so keen to rule out goals & reward defensive teams. Seems an odd way of refereeing a game that relies on attacking play & goals for entertainment. In rugby, if there's doubt you go with the attacking team.
Agree 100% with that post.
Most new laws to be introduced have favoured making the game more entertaining, they have blotted there copy book with this one.

As much as I dislike the current implementation of VAR and would bin it all off tomorrow, the amount of people who still don't realise basic rules around its use is staggering. Such as this handball not being subject to "clear an obvious" and that all goals are checked, regardless.

We've had it for half a bloody season now, come on people.
