isn't it a good bit of business on Wolves' part - if he becomes very attached to us and more importantly we to him, then they have just pushed his price up a few notches?

I'm happy he has signed, but what I don't understand is why it's become fashionable to say that EEL wouldn't cut it in the Championship?

He's been great for us, he is young, he is strong, he wins headers, he scores goals and I'm certain he could cut it in a league above.
I think there seems to be little or no grey area around players mate, mainly because of social media. Personal views become statements of fact, and people seem to be in one camp or another. No could be, should be. It's we're up, we're down he's great or he's crap.

Everybody who can use the net has become an expert with a view on everything, when in truth nobody really knows just how good EEL could be if he continued his career with us under Wilder in the Championship. Morgan was written off by so many as not going to hack it in the Premiership and he turned out to be one of our best players.

Very mixed opinions from the Wolves fans.
Mixed ? Almost to a man they don't think EEL is good enough .......................... he must have put in some dire performances for them, surely he's not that bad is he? A 3.5 year deal would suggest those that matter see something in him.

Seen quite a few saying they like him and this is his longest run of games ever and are hoping he goes back to them full of confidence, and a much better player than the one who left. I agree many are convinced he's not top end Championship level though.

The strange thing is that Wolves have a surfeit of centre halves but extend EEL, who can't get into their squad, with a very long contract. I reckon their director of football is looking long-term and keeping the age profile of the squad in mind. Lambert is only their head coach, so this is probably a committee decision.

EEL might even be loaned out again next season unless their other centre halves have contracts ending.

My impression of him, admittedly on all the away games via Bladesplayer, is that if he gets caught on the back foot his turning circle is that of a tanker and he finds it difficult to recover position to the extent that he must commit a foul to prevent the man going past him. I can see this could be a problem in the Championship. Then again the much vaunted and Saintly Lead Boots had a propensity to misjudge his own ability and go for stuff he had no chance of getting/intercepting thus making him look naive and stupid. Didn't stop him moving up a league though.

I can't understand all this criticism of a young player still learning his trade .
All we should have been concerned about was would Wolves recall him , they aren't ,
and now he's going on to win a champions medal with us as well ,
We had a player who used to play for us , he was slow , didn't train as his knees had gone
but was one of the best defenders in the world , step forward the " black pearl " of inchicore
Oh ah Paul McGrath ,
All you need to do is understand football , and anticipate what is going to happen , that only comes with experience
just ask Roberto Baggio at giants stadium in USA 94 , where he was marked out of the game by a
supposedly slow , big defender , who's first touch wasn't great , and didn't train very much , oh and he was very fond of the sauce .

Having just read the EEL thread on their forum, there's are some who'd like him back but the general consensus seems to be that he's fine in league one and maybe lower Championship but not good enough for a team going for promotion to the Prem.

They're currently only 5 points off a relegation spot. I think maybe their manager is one of the few there who's not kidding himself on and maybe he's simply planning ahead.

It could also be that the pigs are firming up their interest and Wolves have got a scent of the tuna man's money.

Ah, the mingling ming of undercooked pork and over-rich tuna, drifting south along Penistone Rd in a toxic fucking cloud, headed straight for the middle of town.

It's like the opening sequence of a bad 1950s b-movie !

Can't say I get this. Wolves may now be entitled to fee as he will now be under contract to them at the end of the season and EEL has probably got a pay rise, as he wouldn't have signed otherwise. But, EEL has now limited his options as any club he wants to go to will now be paying Wolves a fee instead of him a signing on fee, and his wages will reflect the fact a transfer fee has been paid.

Unless Wolves' intention was to keep him all along and EEL was in on the deal and the loan was just what it said on the tin.

TEE -HEE !
Tony Soprano to Uncle Junior on the golf course after hearing the latter did cunnilingus ,
"You have tuna for lunch or what ?"

I'm pleased he's signed, because it avoids unsettling a defence that is doing ok up to now. I say "ok" because I don't think it's the meanest defence we've ever had - and I don't think that EEL is the colossus of a player that some Blades have made him out to be. But he's definitely improved us, which wasn't hard to do considering we've kind of not bothered with centre halves under the last two managers. Can he cut it in the Championship? I don't know. I must be honest and say I think he's a bit suspect on occasions, even at this level. I think he'd get caught out more regularly at the next level up and get done for pace especially. But, we don't need to worry about that for now. We can cross that bridge later perhaps, if we find ourselves promoted. For now, it's good that we've got him till the end of the season (which I assume includes the play-off games too?)

We of all clubs should know that just because someone signs a contract doesn't mean they won't be sold within 6 months.

Murphy and Blackman are two recent examples.

Signs a new contract but Wolves officially agree to not recall.

Bittersweet. I don't think he'll cut the mustard in the championship but in this league he's top drawer. Best case scenario?

I think he’d be OK in the championship (but not exceptional at that level) and would certainly have advocated taking him on a free if Wolves hadn’t been renewed but the main priority is getting out of this league. Then we’re in a better position to shop and it should be easier to replace him so overall, I’m happy enough with this outcome. Wolves may still choose to sell him and if the price is right, we can consider that as and when. For now, we’ve secured his services for the rest of the season which was important.

I think it's his ability to deal with pacey forwards running at him with the ball on the deck that requires work. Chuck a ball in the air to him and it's his all day long. Run at him and he hasn't necessarily got the turn of speed to do much about it and thus requires the right players around him.

But we said that about Maguire and Southgate is watching him for England so who knows?!

I think his other issue, which Maguire didn’t have, is the ability to occasionally misread the weight of a lofted ball over his head. When Jake Wright doesn’t play, EEL and Basham often look like they could get done by the ball over the top as neither quite seem to have the same awareness as Wright to mop up. I think EEL’s best position is on the right opposite JOC where both can go and attack everything safe in the knowledge that Mr Unbeaten is behind them to clean up any loose ends.

They’ve got a few who seems to be considered similar in quality to EEL by their fans (Batth, Stearman, Iorfa, Hause etc.) so it might be that if EEL’s not available next year, one of the others is. Sure there will be some to go at that we can attract if we are a championship club. The priority right now is just getting there.

A little bit deflating, but only a little. Got no doubt that CW'll already have targets in mind to replace him for next season.

Anyway, what matters is the here and now, and that's sorted.

Welcome back Big Ethan!
This is exactly my thoughts, a bit deflated, but we get what we need to get out of this league and the lad gets a new contract that, which none of us would begrudge him.

I'm pleased but bloody hell the big winner is Ethan! Got himself a big contract! And goes back a hero at the end of the season. (Hopefully )

IMO EEL could 100% cut it in the Championship. Seem to remember reading he has been dogged by injury when he joined Wolves so got limited time. What makes people think he can't cut it? he's relatively quick, reads the game well, 6ft something etc. etc..

But can we afford the c£3m tag on him + his tasty wages in the summer?

If Wolves have a £3m price tag on him they are almost as deluded as the fuc**ng truffle snuffling piggy bas**rds !!

I doubt that he would command more than around £500 - 600,000 ....... imho.

I could never quite understand why we needed to "sign" EEL in January, as he had already supposedly signed for the season, with Wolves able to recall after 6 months. I put 2 and 2 together and assumed that we had done this so that Wolves got some extra pennies out of us as they would lose him at the end of the season and we could get him to sign a pre-contract for next season.
Obviously that was completely wrong now he's re-signed a new contract at Wolves.....maybe they are just gearing up for Lg 1, or can't afford some of the other CB's they have and will have to get rid at the end of the season.
Now he's signed up for the rest of the season, do we look forward to next season and get Webster in now, or just hold fire until the end of the season to see where we stand?

yeh good point actually - £3m a bit ridiculous! i was over excited

Agree with the comments about this being a win-win. We get EEL for the rest of the season to help us compete for promotion. He gets a better contract, and they will get a fee for him - if they sell in the summer.

Not worried about EEL and next season - if Wolves want to keep him, we can sign a (whisper it) better replacement in the summer - IF we get promoted.

Blimey – some of them seem to believe that he's a useless lump that's simply benefiting from playing in a confident team at a lower level. He's been a major part of transforming us from a group of defensive lightweights into a well-organised unit, and contributed with goals and assists to boot.
I think you may be confusing him with Jake Wright.

Easy mistake to make, I guess :)

Are you related to Berty?

Just read it on transfer updates.
Signed a new wolves deal apparently?

Apologies, I have only just caught up! 12hr nights do strange things to the brain!!! Oh well, atleast it's almost bedtime!!:p

I take the point that he isn't the best passer of the ball or necessarily the quickest. Having those attributes isn't essential in a centre back though... Wes Morgan and Robert Huth are the perfect example of that.
Bobby Moore wasn't that brisk for a central defender, but seemed to get by.
