EEL - remains at BDTBL until summer

A little bit deflating, but only a little. Got no doubt that CW'll already have targets in mind to replace him for next season.

Anyway, what matters is the here and now, and that's sorted.

Welcome back Big Ethan!

I take the point that he isn't the best passer of the ball or necessarily the quickest. Having those attributes isn't essential in a centre back though... Wes Morgan and Robert Huth are the perfect example of that.

yes- Wes Morgan is that sort. Saw him playing for Forest - think we drew 1-1 (our Morgan scored) on a freezing cold Tuesday evening and though he was a right fucking donkey..............Premiership winner now, so there are some exceptions.

Just think next season we are going to need to real experience at CH - JOC is capable, but he needs a Wright type player to talk him though games.

My main fear is that CW likes 4 at the back - ELL/Bash/Wright/JOC have the benefit of playing in a 3 - not convinced EEL will be ok in a 2, especially with CW wanting full backs to push on.

Not sure why people say he won't cut it in the Champ. Until the day if and when we get there we can't really judge him. Players perform differently under different managers and styles of play. Wilder is already one step ahead of us lot so let's get behind his decisions. UTB!!

I think if we did finish the job the days of three CB's will end in the Championship as teams would have a field day against our wingbacks

Don't we just buy better wingbacks? I'd have question marks over Lafferty and Freeman in the Championship so surely they'd be backup?

Happy to be proved wrong by both of them, of course!

This is the $64,000 question. Given that a lot on here do not think EEL will cut it in the Championship, or "higher end championship" as it is often so succinctly quoted, just who the fuck are these potential replacements for EEL. CW will be given the usual million or so and for that you won't get anyone close to EEL's talent. I reckon we could have got him for £0.5m with a decisive offer a week ago.

EEL just signed a 3.5 year new contract with Wolves - that makes a permanent deal more expensive at the very least! At least he'll help get us up before going home.

My guess why we haven't signed him permanently now is that Wolves are probably demanding more than we're currently willing to offer as a League One club and if we get promoted then we can obviously decide then to go back with an appropriate bid with a Championship budget. I think if Wolves actually wanted him they would have recalled him now as opposed to allowing him stay with us, its not as if they are exactly doing really well and presumably they must feel he isn't as good as what they already have. The only worry is that they see him as one for the future (when I say future I don't mean like an 18 year old and with promise but for more so for next season) and don't want to sell him.

Crap, scrap the above just seen he has signed a long term contract! Oh well, that doesn't bode well but in Wilder we trust! I say get in a young centre half now that can emerge as the season goes on to replace EEL for next season, if as it looks he is in their plans, so the new guy can get more football as the season goes on. Aaron Pierre springs to mind but maybe that's just because he reminds me of EEL!

The most important thing for me he is with us fir the rest of the season, keep the feel good factor intact, everything is going well, next seasons team? No idea, lets win promotion and then lets see what Wilder wants and the backing he gets to achieve it. No doubt EEL is enjoying himself at the Lane and will want to stay and finish the job off and then he will also have to look at his own future when (hopefully) promotion is achieved.

Tbh, who'd imagined EEL as a target before Chris brought him here? He wasn't suggested by anyone.

There'll be plenty of potential under-the-radar targets out there (primarily loanees from higher-up clubs). One of the many delights right now is regularly being surprised by transfer targets (Carruthers??).

In saying that I'd much rather he'd not signed his long-term deal with Wolves (which, to my mind, just about completely rules out him being here next season). But he is a Wolverhampton lad, so he's probably delighted & good luck to him. Wolves have shown he's a part of their future.

Here's the full article on EEL staying at Wolves. The stand out quote for me is

"You don't know where you're going to be, living situations can change all the time so I'm just really happy to sign a new three-and-a-half-year deal."

I'm genuinely shocked here, I thought Wolves would take up the years option for him to stay until the end of next season, maybe have a look at him in pre-season, but offering him another 3 years tells me they are doing more than just protecting their asset. From EEL's point of view, I would be very wary of signing such a long deal when he isn't currently required but I don't blame him either as he's local to Wolves and has come through their youth system.

I think it's his ability to deal with pacey forwards running at him with the ball on the deck that requires work. Chuck a ball in the air to him and it's his all day long. Run at him and he hasn't necessarily got the turn of speed to do much about it and thus requires the right players around him.

But we said that about Maguire and Southgate is watching him for England so who knows?!

Hmmm.........that sounds very diplomatic for S24SU - you should get a job at the UN :)

Thank you wolves and here is hoping you go on a run like Roy Keane Sunderland and get to premier. Maybe they will then let us have him again for free

Wonder if they've given us first refusal and maybe a fee agreed in principle. That way, if we turn him down, they can still get a fee for him.

Im quite surprised at the downer on ebanks landell new contract. Because it was piece of news ive been expecting since November when i found his contract expired in june. So wolves were always going to renew it so they still have that option whether July/August or next January to recoup some money if they do decide to sell. Like every club in football league would do,

dont see how that upsets the balance, every footballer wants a league medal regardless of league & he knows what hugely difficult job he has next year to break into a wolves squad that knocked out PL stoke away from home & with that chinese investment/ takeover as proved with zola at Birmingham they like names over substance sometimes

You still don't get it do yer? Re Brayford
No Clough Not Playing.

I'm happy he has signed, but what I don't understand is why it's become fashionable to say that EEL wouldn't cut it in the Championship?

He's been great for us, he is young, he is strong, he wins headers, he scores goals and I'm certain he could cut it in a league above.

It's a bit like when we were utter shit under Nigel Clough but "would easily cope playing the the league above".

Crazy nonsense.

I think we were all expecting Wolves to take up the years extension that they were entitled too but to give him another contract for 3 seasons after this one for a player that they are quite happy to see play games for us, rather than rejoin them now took me by surprise. I know they might think that at 23 EEL is still young and can be a valuable asset but the way Wolves fans talk about him is that he wasn't good enough for the Championship. I know the fans at any club don't decide who is offered new contracts but the overwhelming view was that EEL wasn't up to it for them, although based on how he has done for us I would have been delighted if we'd signed him this summer. The change in manager must be the only factor that's change this but with him been allowed to stay with us till the end of this season I wasn't then expecting the big extension.

As others have said, the main thing is that we keep him till the summer and we can sign a replacement in the summer, if expected Wolves want to keep him. Its a brave move on their part if they've only offered him an extension to get a maximum fee back.

Couldn't give a fuck about next season yet and who EEL will be playing for. He is an integral part of our team this season and a big part in our promotion push, so the fact we have him till the end of the season is a huge plus. I'll worry about our squad next season if we go up or if we don't.

Wolves fans hardly jumping for joy about him getting a new contract

Summat's up, that's for sure Roy. EEL may have limitations at a higher level, he's certainly still learning at this level, but his plusses are worthy of inclusion, and who knows, under Wilder in a higher division, playing another season alongside JOC and possibly Wright or one other, we could have a decent player....all variables of course, so let's focus on this season for now.

To be honest, it's not the end of the world that EEL has extended his contract with Wolves. Let him enjoy the rest of the season with us and then it gives us chance to re-evaluate at the end of the season. I love the lad, but we all got carried away with the beard and in the end it didn't really work out!
