David Edgar has reported for international duty with Canada, Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins revealed following his team’s FA Cup victory over Worcester City.

Edgar, on loan from Birmingham City, had been expected to feature in the first-round tie but was excused after being selected for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Honduras and El Salvador.

The centre-half has not appeared for United since injuring a hamstring at Port Vale last month, although Adkins, speaking after his team beat their non-league opponents 3-0, confirmed Edgar took part in a behind-closed-doors training session before the game.

“David has trained but he’s gone to represent Canada,” Adkins said. “I just made the call.

“He trained in the morning, in the pouring rain, when we put a session group on. He took part in that but he’ll go away now and hopefully get some game-time. “Then, all being well, he can come back and be in a better position to be challenging for a place here with us.”

With Edgar set to miss the forthcoming games against Fleetwood Town and Southend - Benito Floro’s squad face Honduras in Vancouver on Friday before travelling to San Salvador later this month - Adkins’ decision represents a show of faith in young Harrison McGahey, particularly as Chris Basham, who partnered Neill Collins in Edgar’s absence against City, was withdrawn with a groin strain.

McGahey, signed from Blackpool on the eve of last season, has impressed United’s coaching staff with his improvement in recent weeks and replaced Basham during the closing stages of a match which saw Jose Baxter, Conor Sammon and Kieron Freeman score.

“I don’t want to be losing players ideally but it’s a great honour to represent your country,” Adkins said. “Nobody stands in the way of that and quite rightly so in my book. All being well, David will come through okay and get some good minutes under his belt which, like I say, will ultimately benefit us.”

Adkins, a former physiotherapist, has outlined plans to improve United’s fitness record after inheriting a squad showing signs of wear and tear following a 63 -match campaign under his predecessor, Nigel Clough.

The programme, devised in tandem with fitness and medical staff at the Steelphalt Academy training complex, is designed to ensure “our players are robust enough” to take part in at least 40 fixtures a season.

Matt Done, Bob Harris, Ryan Flynn and Paul Coutts feature among a clutch of key names who saw their preparations for August’s League One opener at Gillingham interrupted by injury while defender John Brayford, a £1.5 million acquisition from Cardiff City, has yet to play since Adkins’ appointment in June.

Coutts, who joined Basham and Che Adams on the treatment table as United dispatched City, is unlikely to travel to Highbury for tomorrow’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy quarter-final against Town.

“The first goal was great,” Adkins said. “Couttsy and Dean Hammond worked the ball forward, knocked it around the corner and Che has gone through before being brought down. Maybe their lad could have been sent off but you don’t want to see that. It was a penalty and nobody had a complaint.”

Hopefully, if Edgar can rediscover the form that he showed when he first signed for us, it will mean that we only need 1 x CH, 1 x RW, 1 x CM, 1 x GK and 1 x CF to chase a play-off place this season .....

I'd say LW is more pressing than RW (JCR and Flynn for that role). I'd also dispute that we need a CF. Adams, Sharp, Sammon and Done are about as good a 4 as you can ask for at this level.

Regarding the CF issue ..... yes on paper they are a solid four !!

Regrettably .... in the harsh reality of this agricultural division, Billy hasn't scored for weeks and has missed a hat-full, Che is still young and needs nurturing, Done has been attending McEveley's "crap performance" master- classes, and Sammon is not and never has been a regular goal-scorer.

Hence my request to Santa for a big, strong, fast, goal hungry striker please :D

For me it's more about the service and specifically the lack of wingers or indeed anyone beyond JCR in the squad that has any ability or inclination to take a man on.

I don't disagree with you regarding this, however, we've been creating chances and nobody scores them, so on this basis I'm campaigning for the whole spine of the team to be rebuilt.

Currently, in this Division, we're not fit for purpose, conceding far too many stupid goals and not scoring enough !! After last nights debacle, this is yet more evidence that we need to have a very big clear-out of underperformers and rebuild from the spine of the team outwards.

So:

1. Edgar has been injured and has not played for a while
2. We are weak in the centre of defence
3. Because of this injury, it seems that Adkins could have prevented him going to the Canada games and let him rehab some more.
4. Adkins decided to let him go.

If Edgar gets injured (again) on international duty, Adkins is not going to come out of this very well.

I think all strikers miss chances at this level. We didn't create enough against Millwall and Crewe. I think our strikers would walk into nearly any league 1 team. Can't say the same about our midfield.

I think it's refreshing for a manager to let players represent their country and not try to force them to prioritise their clubs. We often complain about PL managers and players not valuing the national team so I can't criticise Adkins for that. Hopefully he gets minutes under his belt and is ready to go when he returns.,

In all honesty I'd send Sammon back in January and see if we can get someone better in. Despite a promising start I've not been impressed.

We're still missing a decent central midfield. That has to be the priority IMO.

I think the priority is to make sure people have more leg room on the kop ;)

I agree 100% with that sentiment. What makes me wary is that Edgar is not fully fit.

Seems to lose out on every header, jumps lower than he runs obviously.

I agree he's not as good in the air as he should be for his size. Carl Asaba syndrome. But he works the channel's, is quite mobile for a big lad, is decent at holding the ball up if played to chest/feet etc and chips in with a few goals. For me, he is a good foil for Sharp.

Didn't play in their home win over Honduras. Did play in the 2nd game, was subbed after 71 minutes in their game in El Salvador. Hopefully that wasn't due to picking up an injury...

I swear since we've signed him he's played more for the moosefuckers than he has for us. If he gets injured again do they compensate us for the wasted wage, maybe poutine in the pie stands, or a free seal clubbing holiday for the rest of the squad?

They will give us a free moose if he gets injured.

You've reminded me of a classic from one of Britain's best bands...

So, having let the just recovered Edgar make a transatlantic trip to play 19 minutes of football, he did not make the 16 on Saturday.

Has anyone at the club explained why?
