I wasnt at the game so if you were there then that must have been the description of Woody's goal
Sorry SB,I thought you were at the game and was wanting to know if anyone else could remember..I wasn't there either but was only reading about it the other week..remember reading Woody's goal came off the post,so that could have been what deceived Jennings.

I remember him getting two at The Lane, both at The Kop end I think. Pretty sure Billy D got the other. 3-1 win over somebody or other. Correct me on the detail if I'm wrong - I usually am!
Just checked the bible. I thought we played at Everton before playing at Arsenal and now I realise that the Everton game was two weeks after. Bone hasnt scored more than once for us in a competitive game. His goals for the rest of that season was a fine header at the Lane end in the 3-1 home win against Clough's Derby, the equaliser on my 11th birthday in the 1-1 draw at Wolves, a goal in the 2-0 home win against Palace (dont remember the goal and which end), a tap in in the 3-1 home win against Coventry and it was at the Kop end. For the following season he scored only 3 times. In the 5-0 win against Arsenal (Lane End), in the 1-1 home draw against Newcastle (not sure which end but I remember he reacted quickly to tap in the lead when McFaul parried a shot- think it was at the Lane End- I was watching the match from JSS and I cannot remember the reason why as my dad had season tickets for two in the BLUT and with me at boarding school for most of the games, my dad's friend's son used my season ticket in the BLUT). His last goal for us was in the Spurs game we have discussed in the thread

When doing FB article on Woody's goals and assists about 12 years ago, I think from reading the Green Un archives at the Central Library, Woody broke away, Jennings came out of goal, Woody used the outside of his right foot to spin the ball slowly past the helpless Jennings and , yes, I think the report said that the ball hit the post before it got in. Ramsey was heard to say that it was a clever goal

I must have been thinking, albeit imperfectly, of the Coventry game. Did Dearden score 2?

On these occasions I always take refuge in the words of my mentor, the greatest story-teller the world has ever known:

"There either is or is not, that's the way things are. The colour of the day. The way it felt to be a child. The saltwater on your sunburnt legs. Sometimes the water is yellow, sometimes it's red. But what colour it may be in memory, depends on the day. I'm not going to tell you the story the way it happened. I'm going to tell it the way I remember it."

Charles Dickens
Great Expectations

Such elegant, evocative prose. It enables me, despite reliable assurance to the contrary, to picture Jim Bone scoring two at the Kop end. For me, if no-one else, that's exactly what happened!

That's my favourite ever book Pinchy.

Delighted to hear it, Nuddy. At last we've found something in common :)

Dickens can be hard work at first, but so rewarding if you stick at it.

I know this is irrelevant to the Blades, but if anyone has never read (as opposed to sniffed) Charlie, then Great Expectations is the one to read first. Next "A Tale of Two Cities" and you're hooked. David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol, The Old Curiosity Shop, and you're off and running......

I quite like Dickens but elements of his style put me off. Great Expectations I find annoying and his habit of naming characters after their personalities/traits does grate a bit.

If only we had an Artful Dodger on the wing and a Pecksniff up front!

Dearden scored the 3rd at the Lane End, the 1st one was an own goal at the Kop End by Mick Coop. the goals can be viewed in YTV's video of 100 great goals (produced in 1993). It rained heavily that day. The Coventry match is one of the few that I probably went to in the 1970s but have no recollection of going and seeing the goals on the YTV video didnt help me to remember going to the game.
