Great to see Stevens' movement for the first goal - some of our forwards could / should learn from it, including the one who was rooted to the spot waiting for the ball to arrive. He's a much better finisher than Stevens but he needs to work on his movement in the box.

Good point about his movement but a bit harsh on the lad that was in the right place to score 30 times last season

Is this a serious post about Sharp's movement in the box?

Who set the 3rd goal up? Looked like Brayford but couldn't tell for sure. The cross was brilliant.
Yes brayford but basham would have done it better :D

It was Brayford's cross that set up our third, yeah. Good to have him back tbh.

And Stevens did what Freeman was doing all last season...arriving late and unmarked into the penalty area and smacking it into the net. Happy days if we've got a goal threat from both wing backs.

Basham wouldn't have been in that position as he doesn't play right wing back.

Think you missed the sarcasm there. On that point though JOC and Basham were both advanced enough to put crosses in last season on a number of occasions..

Is this really a dig at Sharp. Fucking ridiculous

It was an observation about several of our forwards as I said in the post - the Eastleigh goal was a great example of what happens all too often, hence the reason for commenting on it. And yes, I do know how many goals Billy and the rest of the team scored last year and yes, I am a Billy fan - but you either improve or get left behind, I'd like to bet that the coaching staff have already pressed the replay button several times.

And at any rate, he was still playing in the right centre-half position when he made the cross! He overlaps into the space on the right as Freeman had drifted into the penalty area. We don't play rush wingbacks, to the best of my knowledge anyway.

Can't believe people are having a pop at Sharp.

He has 45 minutes and really didn't get into third gear. You could see he was pretty much saving his effort rather than going all out. It was a PSF, people.

A travesty really that a player of his quality is not under consideration for whatever the real reason is.

Sharp. He was stood back post waiting for ball
Watch the goals again. He makes a run to the back post and then holds his position because the two defenders are drawn to Stevens. He found himself unmarked in the box, which is what you want as a striker. Every natural goal scorer will tell you how important it can be to just stand still sometimes.

Strange Hammond didn't get more goals then.
He's not a striker though. Did he ever even get in the box? I'm not saying anything controversial here, if you're in a good position in the box and unmarked why would you run towards defenders when you're available for a simple pass that you should be able to finish?

I was of course being facetious.

Your point is well made and running around a lot isn't always the best thing to do. Being able to 'hide' and shake off defenders by NOT moving is indeed the mark of an experienced poacher.

Facetiousness and sarcasm are so 2015.

Very good movement from Stevens, similar to Freeman last season, but from the other flank, so to have two wing-backs in the similar mould is very pleasing to see. To criticise Sharp is a little harsh. So I will go all Bergen Blade on this and see If i can explain my point ;)

The ball is out wide and Clarke is occupying the space at the front post, Sharp the back. Sharp had started his run,

Stevens is very deep still and his marker is a few yards off him.

Carruthers is completely unmarked

As the ball is readied to go in, Clarke is in behind his man at the front post, Sharp behind his. Sharp can drop deeper if the ball comes deep. If the ball comes in now the front and back posts can be attacked.

Also note that Carruthers is showing to receive the ball. Still unmarked. If the ball goes to him at pace he could easily get the shot in from distance.

Stevens is on the edge of the area if the ball goes in beyond Sharp

The ball eventually breaks into the box and Sharp has maintained his position.

You could also argue that had Sharp made that run instead of Stevens he would've been marked and Stevens would've been marked at the back post.

So by Sharp staying deep at the back post, it leaves space for Stevens to move into. Carruthers also does well as he doesn't make the same run as Stevens, but sits out even though he is completely unmarked and as we saw from the first pic, had a midfielder to cover in behind him.

In summary, this is the move you'd want the wing back to make, we saw all last season that Sharp does a lot of work off the ball and is often seen dragging players out wide to create that space in the middle, like this.

For me this is about what Stevens does and not what Sharp doesn't do.

You wouldn't expect this every time, but that would make it a predictable move. Stevens coming in like that keeps the element of surprise. Perhaps next time they'd tighten up on this and instead give Clarke more space on the front post. At which point we exploit that.

I wondered who the "manbun" on top of noggin belonged too,it was a corking cross.

Brayford could almost pass for Ricky Holmes.

You actually stated "rooted to the spot, waiting for the ball". This guy has over 200 career goals and as he's not exactly blessed with blistering pace most of these have come from movement and instinct. He's got knowt to learn from Stevens when it comes to scoring goals and movement in the box.
