We’ve signed 19 year old free-agent goalkeeper Dylan Wharton. He’s most recently of Heanor Town of the United Counties League Premier North (9th Tier) on loan from Chesterfield who’s academy he’s been through. Assume he’ll link up with the 23s.

He was a teammate of Jonathan Jebbison at Heanor, brother of Daniel.

We’re not messing about this transfer window.

Strange one though isn't it?

He's too old to go into the U18s. We have Eastwood who will play occasional U23s. We have the U18 keeper who has played a few. We have Dewhurst and Amissah who I assume we'll try to get League Two or Conference loans. How does he fit in?

I’d guess the two older lads in Dewhurst and Amissah will go out on loan and then this lad and Hiddleston will play 23’s with Eastwood not really featuring unless needed to fill in.

We ran a bit of a two keeper system with Dewhurst and Amissah alternating the other year and I wonder if we’ll do the same again.

We've also got Henry Hampshaw who should move up to the U23s next year.
On the official site it says that Adam Davies, Eastwood and Hiddleston have all been offered new deals, so none are guaranteed to be here.

Eastwood is 37

Yeah with Eastwood being offered a new deal and Davies they’ll make up the senior 3 with Wes I think the middle two will definitely go out on loan and the Hampshaw, Hiddleston and Wharton to compete/rotate gives us some flexibility aswell if someone makes a loan approach for one of them. It’s will be a bit congested but I’m sure we have a plan.

Now this is a crazy idea, but hear me out, maybe he's just quite good and we've signed him for that reason rather than because he "fits in"?

He couldn't get in the Chesterfield matchday squad at the fifth level of English football so it is going to be a hell of a spot if he's anywhere near ready to challenge our team.

Fucking ridiculous.

I never said he was going to challenge for our first team, he's clearly not. Even at National league level you wouldn't expect a 19 year old to be first/second choice keeper, the youngest regular starter I can think of at that level this season was George Wickens (20) who was on loan from Fulham at Wealdstone.

The point I was making is that we could have signed him on the basis that he is or has the potential to be better than the young keepers we currently have (he's slightly younger than Dewhurst & Ammisah).

His contract at Chesterfield came to an end and we signed him pretty quickly after that which suggests we were planning to sign him for a while and just waiting until his contract ran out

I don't think anyone is expecting him to challenge the first team. We signed Ndiaye at about the same age and take out "Chesterfield" and you could have used the same sentence for him. Give the kid a chance:D

Utd could/should make it clear when they sign players which team they've expected to play in. Thay way is negates those that for some reason this lad has been signed to battle for the first team spot.

This goes back to the main fulcrum of modern day football if you want to be successful:
1. Be bankrolled by a billionaire; or
2. Develop your own high quality players.

Option 1 is off the table for now, so we have to scout, recruit and develop which, inevitably, means taking risks and punts. Any 16-20 year old with obvious potential to go to the very top is coming nowhere near us unfortunately, so we have to look for the rough diamonds, the offcuts, the damaged packaging and polish, polish, polish.

Maybe this lad is nowhere near good enough, or maybe we’ve spotted the green shoots of potential and think we have the minerals to nurture them.

Did he sign in the end or not? Still listed as Chesterfield on Transfermarkt and not seen anything officiall.

What's happening with Dewhurst? He's on trial at Scunthorpe, but you don't go on trial before signing on loan, do you?

On the bench for the second 60 minute game vs Lincoln today
Mystery solved
