Duffy, Sharp and Wilder

On a lighter note: I would like to suggest a new club motto (in Latin of course):

“Spunkin Non Spondula”

Got a nice ring to it don’t you think?

I bet most of us work with numbers. Statistics are something entirely different. That’s about coming to a factual conclusion based on evidence that is supported by the numbers. Statistics cannot be “skewed” like you say. They stand up to scientific rigour. I’m not saying folk don’t try to skew them, they most certainly do, but numerically it is absolutely clear what is factual and what is not.

Take a coin from your pocket. Toss it and see how it lands. Do it 10 times. You may get heads 9 times out of 10. What does that tell you?

(The answer is absolutely nothing btw).

In “football science” that tells you that heads is more likely to turn up than tails. This is what football stats are largely based on.

But in science you’d have to toss that coin at least 100 times and heads (or tails) would have to win at least 95 times out of 100 for it to have any scientific meaning. Otherwise, it’s totally meaningless.

I have no time whatsoever for half-arsed statistics conjured up by football fans trying to prove a point or journalists trying to spark interests in a column.

I’m sorry. I’m not trying to be awkward or difficult. But I do understand the relevance of such numbers and what I’m saying is it means nothing statistically. So you’re far better off taking a wider view of the players overall performance and basing your conclusions on that.
Your entitled to your opinion.

If you genuinely believe that in “taking a wider view of a players overall performance” is best done with your eyeballs alone, rather than having a statistical validation, then our views differ wildly.

Your mind can play tricks with you young Jedi ;)

UTB

PS I use my eyeballs to formulate my opinions, which are highly accurate as it turns out, with further statistical validation to ensure my view is not skewed, for whatever reason. The combination is potent to say the least.
One last point. Why do clubs spend literally millions on stats based analysis ??

My favourites are the commentators' stats referring to previous matches. For example 'The last five meetings between the teams have produced 17 goals, so if that's anything to go by we can expect a high scoring game'

Thing is, it's not anything to go by. They'll reel such a stat out if there was a 4-3 a few years ago, despite the fact that all the other games have produced three goals or less

Remember this comment lol

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wroooooonnnngg and wrong and swooping down just a little..........
wrong wrong wrong and double or even triplicate wrong. What the actual fuck wrong and just do a little explaining wrong cos its wrong.

Another rip snorter of a thread.

Right at the height of Wilders blind spot for his then chosen one 😉.

Wonder just how close this actually came to Bill moving on. That would have changed things, let me tell ya !

I thought of this thread as the Duffy situation arose. I think this is where some of the alleged, minor tension between Wilder and Duff stems from. A simple attitude of "keep your family off Twitter, come speak to me if you need to".

Can someone point out the the forums best poster this is an old thread.

Thank you.

This thread was started at the beginning of our promotion season, the season after we consolidated in the Championship and a year after our manager got us out of L1 after years in the wilderness.

Said earlier, this whole situation stinks of duffys stupid bint seeing the pound signs and pulling rank. It’s not like she hasn’t got previous
