Duffy Replacement

The huge difficulty will be in finding a player in the same vein. One who buzzes around, constantly making himself available, finding space and linking everything up. As well as pressing the opposition.
I actually thought brooks did exactly this very well. Iv not seen lots of him but from what I see he's more then capable of holding a place in our team.
In fact I think Carruthers could well make it as well.
I think the plan has always been for these to learn from duffy and eventually take his spot.

How is saying "we play our best with Duffy in the team, but he's not longer got the legs to play 90 minutes. Let's look at signing someone similar who will gradually and eventually replace him when he retires." negative?

Don't agree about him not having the legs, the reason he came off against Barnsley was it was his first start and he spent 20 mins in the 2nd half doing 2 jobs due to the shape of the ten men we were playing against, Sharp was knackered as well for the same reason.

With a few more games he'll be ok. 60 mins until then makes sense.

I do agree that we need decent replacements for all ageing players though.

Now calm down, I'm not saying that we should replace Duffy just yet.

As illustrated yesterday, the way he plays is vital to the team playing well as a unit. He's the glue which holds everything together. Unfortunately, he's only got 60 minutes in his locker.

Whilst both Carruthers and Brooks are talented players, they don't really play in the same way and I'm not sure they are the kind of players who can.

In a perfect world, we'd be able to bring someone in who would be able to perform the same function to a similar level as Duffy. He would be on the bench to begin with but will gradually have more and more of an influence as the season goes on. Eventually taking over from Duffy at the end of the season.

I can't think of any similar players in terms of style or quality from the lower leagues. Any suggestions?

But according to the bed wetters on here, Duffy, like Billy, is nowhere near good enough for La Liga?

You wouldn't have to ask the question if you'd just allowed yourself to enjoy yesterday's demolition of a side universally acclaimed as top 6.

Did you have to try really hard to come up with the OP or does it come naturally?

Give it a rest man and enjoy the ride.

Although we don't need Brooks to be exactly the same as Duffy, he could probably learn a lot playing alongside him, but it'd need a change of system to accommodate that.

Imagine the start of the second half against Barnsley if we'd had Brooks making driving runs up the pitch with Sharp and Duffy, some people say Sharp can't play as a lone striker, but he did a fine job after Clarke got sent off, and for the use Lavery was for much of yesterday, he may as well have been playing as a lone striker again.

I have read through most of the posts, because the OP does have some merits.

Duffy is ONLY as good as he is, because he players like Fleck and Coutts allow him to be who he is.

If Fleck or Coutts or both got injured it is a fair bet that no one else could bring Duffy in to the game as those 2 do. The twitter vote gave Duffy MOM v Barnsley last week - for me it was Fleck who did most of Duffy's dirty work and allowed him to flourish in a free role.

Cloning Duffy would be a mistake - some other poster alluded to a team "evolving" as it progresses and our team has to evolve and stop relying so much on just Duffy. We MUST find other options of winning games. It won't take long for opposition teams to work this out and "sit" a player of Duffy to completely nullify his contributions.
