He’s 34 in October. It’s a foolish move in all honesty. I get wanting to squeeze all you can out of your career especially at the end but to come so close to your first PL season at such a late age and throw it away is beyond me.

Self confessed mad Liverpool fan could have played a part in the PL at Anfield and now very likely won’t do

Is this why Lundstram is starting every game? CW proving a point? My fear is that CW starts the season with Bryan and Lundstram as starters and then has to do his backtracking after a couple of losses. Just a feeling I have based on no evidence whatsoever.

I genuinely don't believe that's something Wilder would even contemplate doing . Luke Freeman has been brought in to replace Duffy and I feel Wilder would have been more than happy to see Freeman starting with Duffy as back up .

Now if Duffys done what its alleged hes done I think hes well and truly shot himself in the foot with this one .

It's a real shame this as both parties lose out . Duffy will probably struggle to find any other club who will match his wages whilst we on the other hand have to pay his wages .

What a shit state of affairs for a brilliant servant to the Club .

Agent might have just fucked his client's career at its highest point if he instigated it.

Why do footballers have agents again?

Should be a not for profit service provided by the league.

I get the feeling that Wilder finds Duffys popularity irksome.
You could have a point you know. I dont think it's so much his popularity though, billy is our hero and Wilder treats him like a son... but a lot have fans have questioned Wilders use of him in the past.
If hes been left out, started on the bench, or taken off every week at the 60min mark, fans didnt like it and thinking back now - I do remember Wilder having to defend his decisions a few times in interviews.

Most successful final third passes in the Championship last season:

Pablo Hernandez (835)
🌟

Romaine Sawyers (713)
👀

Mark Duffy (671)
John Fleck (669)
Mateusz Klich (666)
🌟

Oliver Norwood (594)
Jack Grealish (571)
Bersant Celina (567)#LUFC

What it boils down to, is Duffy has to make a choice between battling for a place in a Premier League team and fulfilling a career long ambition, or, securing a longer term contract elsewhere which may be more financially rewarding. A tough choice, as is it will be a difficult task to get a place in front of the new signings.
Wilder is quite right to concentrate on finalising his recruitment plans, and giving Duffy time to consider his options away from the rest of the squad.
When they get time to talk I would love to see Duffy accept the challenge and maybe earn an extension by January.

Love Duffy, but we move on. No room for sentiment now we’re in the big leagues. We need athletes in that position.

Hes under contract for another year Wilder not trying to get rid but being honest to Duffy regarding his future.
If he leaves it's because he chooses to look for an extended contract.
If Duffy feels he wants to stay and fight for a place all well and good.
Who knows he might be a revelation and win a further year.
As I said ( and I'm not in the know ,just a bit of common sense ) he has the choice Wilder wouldn't send him to Coventry he will have too much respect for him to do that.

One would hope so , but seeing Wilder’s quote in The Stir , he seems pissed off with Duffy and I don’t think publishing those speed and acceleration test will have improved his mood

If clubs are interested then he's obviously been touted around by his agent

See ya later duffman thanks for bouncing day

Explains why we are interested in Sawyers then.

Wilder is only being consistent here.... He said that new contracts wouldn't be discussed until the season had started.... It's not like the players (and agents) weren't warned. Baldock will be in the same position.
Why he has a new contract on his mind, at a time when he has a chance of playing in the Premier league for the first time in his career, I don't know.

His agent probably been offering his name around all last week and then Duffs gone in for a new deal and Wilder knew all about it.

Seemed a bit of a bad taste definitely but let’s not just all jump to conclusions on what’s happened, he’s been quality for us and it’s a little surprising but I wouldn’t have him play in front of Freeman, Morrison, Robinson or Didzy in that 10 role.

That leave us with a player who has done excellently but at the wrong end of his career and having only just in recent years really made big money he’ll need another serious deal.

Sounded to me from the interview as though Duffy has probably asked for a bigger salary / longer contract and the club has said no on the basis that Duffy already has a contract with a ratchet for promotion (and we don’t want to negotiate contracts with existing players now anyway).

No idea how justified Duffy’s request is but no doubt we’ll want to be hardline with him to avoid half the squad (and their agents) asking for the same.

Interesting... sounds like they've fell out over it to me.

Wilder has quite rightly (and as usual I was way ahead of the game on this one - see earlier posts) put a marker down as to who’s the gaffer. There can only be one and it ain’t Mark Duffy.

Duffy has a contract. He can stay and have a season in the Prem, perhaps earn a new one. He’s the one initiating problems, not the manager. Tufty absolutely right to slap him down.

Been a joy to watch you Mark and thanks for everything, especially Bouncing Day, but our club comes before you, by many a mile. Hope you find somewhere to your satisfaction. We have a Premier League season to take care of, that’s what matters most, not you.

Thought Bryan was good in the air tonight but his passing was piss poor and lunny did some decent things but also got caught in possession a few times. Neither are good enough to start in the PL but both are 100% ers. Very sad about the Duffy situation but if he's trying to fuck the club over then I'm with Wilder.

Think people need to note this is a lot more common practice than people think and not just Wilder “making an example”.

To me Duffy was most effective for us the last 3 seasons when we needed to unlock a deep defence that were happy to sit in and defend. Not many, if any teams will line up with that formation or mentality in the PL. Add to that, Duffy’s fitness levels and age I can fully understand CW not standing in his way. He will forever be a legend at the lane in my eyes, if not only, for THAT goal.

Probably had a weekend break with Maupay !! Shades of last season,Duffy left out of the first two games, both defeats,i'm not surprised with a midfield of Evans and Lundstram............. the buck stops with the manager, but they do sometimes make mistakes.

Well he’s made no mistake here. Unless you think players should decide whether and when they get new contracts.

There’s no two sides to this. The manager is absolutely right. What else was he supposed to do?

It didn't cound good but we do only have one side of the story of course. Who knows, maybe Duffs partner wants him nearer to home, or on more money its his last chance to get a big deal etc.

On the other hand, Duffs 33 and has had a wage increase as Wilder said when we went up, might not be much, who knows. He's got a chance to play in the Premier League, or he could join someone in the Championship, whoever that might be, that would inevitably sign someone in his position if they got promoted and he's back where he is now.

I just don't get why he's forcing the issue but as I say we don't have the full story.

But whatever the full story, we can’t have players deciding whether and when they get a new contract or not. That’s for the manager to decide. Ultimately, it’s as simple as that isn’t it? Nobody is making him either go or stay. That’s his choice but he has no moral high ground here.

Whatever the ins and outs of this situation are , I think it will be a great pity if Duffy is not with us next season .

This feeling is not based on any kind of sentiment or sense of entitlement on his part , but rather the fact that he is still a very good footballer who , in my view , is well capable of making a valuable contribution in the Premier League .

As others have observed , we nearly always look a better side when he is in the team which is due to the fact that he brings a certain level of calmness to our attacking play which others fail to replicate, together with his knack of scoring crucial goals in important matches .

As much as i love Duffy at Utd, and as much as he is entitled to look to secure his and his families financial future, it seems that he and his agent have been looking for a rise in wages when they were more than happy to signa previous contract which included a rise on promotion. Now they want another as the previous is no longer good enough.

CW is bang right with his response here in that he will decide when new contracts are handed out, not the player or his agent.

If MD had got his head down this season and worked hard at trying to get in the team, im sure he would have had every opportunity of getting involvement in games next season and perhaps getting another year offered around December time. Seems to me that they have pushed too early for another deal and CW has laid down the law and told him to go out then and find himself a better deal.

CW had to give that response otherwise everyone and their grandad in the squad could end up knocking on his door wanting to renegotiate their contracts, which they were previously more than happy to sign.

Sees that CW has called their bluffs.
