My guess is that it's just closed for a bit but I;ve only got a text message saying it's shut so not sure.
Like you say - it's always a bit touch and go if it's open or not. Seem to remember it being closed at the start of last season too.

The Rutland shut first time round when Phil had had enough of Punch Taverns. I believe then that Plug took over the lease, but had to shut fairly recently as it couldn't make money.

Aye. Many a happy hour I've spent in there. I always liked the building as well. I suppose the best bet round that bit is the Red Lion on Charles Street now.
