Did we miss him on Saturday, is his presence in the team more vital than any of us realise, without him is relegation certain....?

I'm not sure I know the answers and I'm no Doyle fan but something went drastically wrong against Crewe and we were a complete shambles...

Could it be the much maligned Doyle actually does make a difference and he could be the difference between us staying up or going down...?

I think there is a 12 page thread about Doyle from a few days back...

I'm not his biggest fan but we clearly missed him. Scougall not strong enough for me for centre midfield. I was surprised McGinn didn't start alongside Coady.

Doyle brings experience and guidance to the inexperienced , pity he cant match those skills with the same level of ability , on the ball , but his presence may have to be tolerated for the first bits .We will need experience in a dog fight , pretty football goes out the window till August as we must win games ugly if we have too and Doyle is very ugly

This is incredible. We don't miss him, we've played just as badly before with him in the team. This thread proves the fickleness of football fans. Doyle was the devil 2 days ago, and 'had to go' and 'had to get the same treatment as Brandy' bla bla bla

He was and still is a liability. The fact that out replacements are equally shite doesn't help. Crewe was a bad day, but we'd have still lost with Doyle in the team, make no mistake.

Doyle is a bit like that squirt of balsamic vinegar in a stew.

You think it wouldn't make a difference, but somehow when it is not there something is missing. You don't know why?, and just don't understand, but it is so.

I know I'm in the minority but I don't mind Doyle at all. I certainly don't think he deserves a lot of the stick he gets. I can't defend what he did against Fulham because it was downright stupid, but as a defensive midfielder, we could do a lot worse. He intercepts a lot of the opposition's play and his distribution is far from poor. He also has a good shot on him.

On the evidence of what I have seen, Doyle is a far better midfielder at the moment than either McGinn or Coady and I would rather have him in the side.

Our away record (with Doyle everpresent I think?) was 1 win, 3 draws and 9 defeats before Saturday.

Couldn't you say the same about 2/3rds of the squad? Maybe not as ever present, but still attached to awful stats.

Let's be right, we've suffered many awful performances this season where Doyle has played. Let's not hail him as the solution after one game without him. That said, I think his replacement Coady is a poor player. Reminds me of Michael Twiss. Come from a big club with a good pedigree of international football but gave very little.

He's certainly got more to offer than Twiss, which isn't difficult, but it seems difficult to get it out of him regularly. I also don't think anyone has decided his best position as yet.

He is a frustrating player because in brief glimpses you see the hallmarks of a box to box midfielder (which apparently draws Gerrard comparisons). But you'll also see stupid 30 yard balls sail nowhere near a teammate when a 5 yard pass is on. Perhaps decision making will improve with experience.

I think he will be back in against Brentford probably at the expense of Coady.

Just got that impression from NC's post match interview. On the other hand, if he is playing Howard on the basis of 2 clean sheets, then perhaps he won't change the team. Lots of games coming now, need all the players we've got.

Hope not. Apart from the Crewe blip, we're clearly a better team without him. We had some good quick passing today. Much of it would have broken down or slowed to a standstill with Mrs. Doyle.

I guess he'll be in for Coady based on today's performances. But there is a good case for leaving McGinn in the deep midfield role - he looked better there today and versus Fulham than he has playing higher up.

Yes three times in that interview Clough mentioned Doyle being available on Wednesday without being asked about it. Heavy hint that he will be back in.

If Coady is left out it might be to allow for an extra striker. For me, we look better and get better results without Doyle.

Best Doyle can hope for is a place on the bench.Look a better team without him.back to back wins without "our leader" hope Cloughie stands by Coady

McGinn played the defensive midfielder excellently today. His tackles/challenges were clean and his distribution was never wasteful. Looks a much more accomplished player in this role then Doyle ever really has.
