Double promotion?

The real league in this country involves the regular bottom 13 in the Prem and top half of the Champ. There is not a lot between them - so we might as well get promoted and get enough £££ for Tufty to be able to afford better players to win us a cup. We want to keep our values and our club though.

Although I enjoy quality football I like players who drink beer not Cristal.

I'm enjoying the ride - vaulting ambition means never being satisfied, but I'll leave that to Tufty, while I just keep feeling fucking smug!

Magic

Lets not get giddy! I am with Vintage Shirt, just enjoy the ride and get a kick out of upsetting the odds, beating teams who assumed we would be relegation fodder.

The pre game views from all seem to have a similar tone. "They have done well so far, but".

You have got to love the but's!!!

I just can't stay grounded. Ten games in and I'd already be gutted if we end up missing out on the play offs at least

It's too early to be talking about this and sounds, well, not good. I thought some people were being a bit daft / annoying at the end of last season when we had a point gap at the top and they were saying "we're not there yet, anything could happen" and this is just the other extreme of the scale. We can talk about promotion when the end of the tunnel is in sight.

This feels much more relaxed than last season. By that, I mean the thought of spending another year down there was awful. Missing out this season would just mean another year in the Championship.

We can enjoy this.

Not just that. I think we can do this.

Promotion party @ Bristol last game of season 10,000 blades fans down there celebrating.

Coming back to this post next year..

It's entirely possible. Leicester and Hudders have shown you can defy expected protocol. We ain't gonna budge easily.

It's brilliant right now. Whilst the rest of the division pull each other's todgers about how much money they can throw at 'names', we're currently doing our own thing - and doing it better.

As JJ said, I'm just loving each week as it comes and not caring about anything else. If we are to be beat, it'll be fucking well earned by the oppo, or down to a set of odd circumstances/gamesmanship. That's a great feeling and keeps me quite secure! It's like we're a different breed. Progressing through hardwork, spirit, spot on coaching and brilliant management.

We're still untrendy. We're still outsiders. But we've got bollocks. We're Blades. Want to move us from the top, earn it ya fuckers.

May have had a few single malts

we're off to a great start but too soon to start bouncing that could come back to bite us in the harris

Kiss my arse my arse,
what ever will be will be,
the futures not ours to see,
kiss my arse my arse,
what will be will be..

I did work in wombwell at the steel/iron factory. Unfortunately it shut down a few years ago due to bad management .I can remember the sulphur fumes though from polystyrene moulds and that was a killer to breathe in.
And yet you still turn up to smell some other shit around once a fortnight;).

I'm happy to moderate my prediction from 12th to 5/6th, we've met one team who are better and there will be others, we struggle with the really fast players (cardiff/leicester) and we are bound to meet some teams who just park the bus and are happy with a point be it home or away. Happy days still.

I'm an eternal pessimist so I still think anywhere from 8th to 15th is a reasonable season. I remember what Fleetwood did to us last year (and Norwich this year) and it seems inevitable that teams will start being more cautious.

What are people's genuine thoughts on this? To be honest I get a little frustrated when I see people saying it's far too early to talk about promotion or league position. Yes it's been 10 games and all that, with a very long way to go, but that shouldn't take away from the belief that is with the fans and the squad right now. Maybe it's just our pessemistic nature due to the recent past and knowing how quickly things can unravel for us.

However for me, there is something truly special happening at Sheffield United right now, something we've waited a long time for.
We have guts, quality, work ethic and a manager who will be remembered forever for how he has turned us around.

Back to the point, I'm starting to think we might just pull it off again. Look at the teams we have played, ok only one in the top 6 as the moment and consequently above us in cardiff. Other than that we have played some 'big' names and dispatched most of them comfortably. What's to say we can't continue this with a bit of strengthening in Jan.

Good times ahead I feel.

On the one hand, it’s our first season back at this level, we have absolutely no right to compete for promotion when you consider our budget, the reputation of the players we’ve brought in etc. as we regularly come up against sides who have single players who cost several times more than our entire team (likes of Neves and Costa for Wolves, Rhodes for the pigs, Assombalonga, Fletcher etc. for Boro). It’s miraculous that we are where we are and surely we can’t expect to maintain it.

On the other hand, I’m reluctant to say we can’t do it because as you say, what we have going on at the lane at the moment is special. We’ve almost managed to drag football back to a time where it wasn’t about money. Wilder and Knill are a special duo and have assembled a special squad. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a combination of team spirit, fight and quality football all at the same time and I refuse to place limits on what they can achieve.

So whilst a mid-table finish would certainly still constitute a job very well done by Wilder and co, it is entirely possible that they could take us on to challenge for promotion, as ridiculous as that may seem, all things considered.

Everybody needs to be careful about what they say.
Talking about promotion and we sound pig like, if it backfires we are there to be shot at
Talking our chances down sounds like good old typical Sheffield United

Just take every game as it comes, just carry on taking the game to anybody that we play, no pressure, if we win celebrate like crazy, if we don't it's not the end of the world.
Do that and let's see where we end up

Whilst I agree with your 2nd paragraph, I disagree that there is a need to be careful. I don’t concern myself about whether we sound “pig like” or like “good old Sheffield United”. I just call the situation as I see it based on the evidence available and I don’t think others should be concerned about doing the same for fear of being tagged with one of those brushes. The danger is when you raise expectations unrealistically and end up turning on a manager who becomes a victim of his own success. That won’t happen any time soon with Wilder. I hope it won’t happen at all.

As someone that went to a fair few games in the double promotion years of 1988-1990, fingers crossed this is looking very familiar. Everyone writing us off and underestimating us as the new upstarts from below but playing with a togetherness and purpose and free scoring positive attitude of lets try to win every game and see what happens that surprised most others, including many fans until Leicester for the final match. Bring it on again please.

A 'bit of strengthening'? What, for the PL?

Try 95% of the squad.

It's a 'not yet' from me, I'm afraid.

pommpey
the likes of brighton, swansea, watford, newcastle and bournemouth don't hold much fear for me but ymmv

Hope we dont get promotion ,because Wilder would be poached by a premier league club.
Just a minute we would be a premiership club phew!

I would be very happy with a good season. Finish in the top eight. We have a phenomenal midfield dept. Potent attack with options and some very good defenders so a lot to build on next season with the return of Coutts as well. CW and AK will have a very in depth knowledge of the division, and we can have a real go. I've not given up on promotion this season and think we still have a good chance but with a resurgent Middlesboro and Fulham now pushing it's 5 places between 7/8 clubs. Cardiff under (most experienced Championship manager in history) Warnock will be a very hard nut to crack, Derby have the squad depth and talent to stay up there, Bristol now they are out of the EFL Cup will concentrate on the league, Villa have a big squad with big money and a very good manager, Fulham are flying and can keep Sessegnon and Middlesboro are getting very organised with players used to the Prem under Pulis. Also I'm not sure if Leeds are out of it yet they are very hot and cold.

So it looks like a very difficult task this season to go up but CW will have them competing until the end and maybe we can cause a few shocks to keep us in the frame, if it doesn't happen it will still have been a great season.
