Eighth is up for grabs
Posted on: Thu 29 Apr 2010

The Blades will be gunning for an away win at Portman Road on Sunday in their bid to finish the season in eighth position.

No fewer than five teams - locked together just outside the play-off slots - could change positions on the final day and only Reading amongst them have a home fixture.

United, currently ninth, haven't won on their travels since back to back successes at Bristol City and Plymouth Argyle before Christmas but have lost only one in ten and kept three clean sheets in the last five games.

With Paddy Kenny and Gary Naysmith back in the side the Blades will feel they can go to Ipswich, get a positive result and possibly overtake Middlesbrough who have a tough task at Leicester City.

The league standings that affect United are:
Pos Pts G/diff
8 Middlesbrough 62 +10
9 Sheffield United 62 +4
10 Bristol City 62 -9
11 Reading 60 +2
12 Doncaster Rovers 59 +1

Final day fixtures concerning the above are:
Blackpool v Bristol City
Reading v Preston North End
Ipswich v Sheffield United
Swansea v Doncaster Rovers
Leicester v Middlesbrough

The proof is in that article!

Reading that actually depressed me.

Oooo 8th place soooo exciting but true alot better than finishing below 20th.

Can't wait for Sunday after reading that! What a match it's going to be.

That valued 8th spot is ours, I can feel it!!

Why? Why must they feel the need to pretend a game is worth something.

And by the way, with it being such a 'vital' game, then does this mean we dont plan any youth players at all. I distinctly remember Blackwell saying that he would give lowton at least 1 game before the season ended to try him out. Look slike that aint happening then....

We want to finish as high as possible. Even though it doesn't mean anything, finishing 8th is still better than finishing 9th.

I have paid good money to see this game, so they better play it like it means something as far as I'm concerned, even if it is only for 8th place :D

He has, he played a very important 45 seconds at Cardiff :D

Big problem is next season might not matter. Bigger things to worry about than Sunday.

let's face it lads. I am one of the muppets who has bought a ticket for sunday (after saying for definate i wasnt going!), but i think most blades will be keeping a firm eye on what is going on back in Sheffield rather than on the pitch at Portman Road.

COMEEE ONNN YOOOUUUUUU EEEEAAAGGGLLLLEEEESSSSS!!!!!!

I still stand with the thought we should all turn up with Palace shirts underneath, so when they beat the unclean we can peel off and reveal our allegiances for the day...

£31 tickets, £30 travel, 4 hour journey by train or road, sunday afternoon K.O....I'm surprised we've even sold 700.

I can't believe that the race for eighth has not been given prominent nationwide coverage. It's a disgrace, can we sue someone?

I can understand the interest in the race to finish sixth (oh, to finish sixth!), but why would anyone give a shiny shite about who finishes as the 41st best team in England? Why are Sky Sports News so pre-occupied with the thoughts of various fat mongs as to who this will be?

Down with this (blue and white striped) sort of thing.

>£31 tickets, £30 travel, 4 hour journey by train or road, sunday afternoon K.O.. feeling when the pigs go down.. priceless ;-)

Highlight of season for me...Wendies down and Leeds stay down....mmmm...but then again what about the income from two sellout games?....Nah...sod it we'de only waste the money or it would go into the BL Black hole.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo.... Its now being billed as a big game and we all know we bottle the big games!

However, we could achieve my preseason prediction for a bad finish of 8th... the best i hope for was 6th!

Just highlights that this is what our season has come to...

A long season best forgotten!
